I was wondering how much pasta I should prepare when I make it? It is just for myself and I don't want to end up making too much but then make too little and end being hungry later. On the back of the box of noodles they way they measure the serving size is too difficult for me to figure out how much pasta to make. Should I measure out 1 cup of dry pasta? 1 1/2 cup? It is penne pasta also...Thanks.
I use a scale and a plastic container for all my pasta measurements. The boxes all say 2 ounces dry (200 calories) is a serving size; from a life of experience I figure 4 ounces per person (and thus 400 calories per serving.)
The 2 ounce serving comes from the same people who get 2.5 sevings as typical for a small can of Campbell's soup. I guess the standards were set in Ethiopia or Somalia.
You cannot BEAT a good digital food scale. Eyeballing foods is just TOO inaccurate.
How much you should cook depends on your health goals.
I try to avoid pasta because it leaves me either stuffed and too full or craving more an hour later. If I do eat pasta, I measure out 1/2 cup with my measuring cup and then make sure that I add lots of stuff - veggies, tofu etc so that I'm full. Itreat pasta like a small side dish, not the main part of my meal.
If you're feeling hungry too soon after maybe you're relying too much on the pasta itself to fill you up and not enough on the stuff you're eating it with. Try adding some lean protein and mounds of veggies.
