Drinking too much water?

I've heard it's dangerous to drink too much water.

How much water is too much?

I generally drink 2 liters a day, but sometimes I'm thirsty for more than that. I don't drink any soda or anything. The only other drinks I have are alcoholic, like wine and stuff or milk with breakfast. Other than that water's really all I drink.

lol, this is nothing you have to worry about at all. You have to drink multiple gallons in one sitting. Drink all you want, if you start feeling a little nausious, then you drank too much. But you could drink 2 gallons or maybe more a day and be fine.

Yes, as the previous poster said, the danger is more of drinking too much at once. It is possible to overload the kidneys. If you spread it out throughout the day it's no problem.

They are all correct. It is very dangerous to drink water too much at once, but spread throughout the day, I know myself, I probably drink about a gallon.

Re: Drinking too much water?

I think the more accurate story is that a college student died from drinking LOADS (and i mean a few gallons) in one sitting in under a certain amount of time. We need 8-10 glasses of liquids per day, and most people use water to judge that. 2-3 doesn't seem like enough..it is true that you can drink too much water, but "too much" consists of gallons in one sitting, and it is highly unlikely that someone will drink that much without purposely setting out to do so..

Re: Drinking too much water?

8-10 glasses of water a day(throughout the day)is definitely not too much. I go through at least 2 gallons everyday. But 2 gallons in one sitting, now that would be too much.

Re: Drinking too much water?

What I found interesting in the story of the college student that died from drinking too much water; actually died because he didn't have enough salt. Like the water diluted his blood. So, if you drink a lot of water throughout the day; also increase salt intake? I drink a lot of water, too.

Re: Drinking too much water?

You can drink too much water - which is called water intoxication and it can lead to hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood) and death. However, don't be scared by this, in order to water intoxicate, you must drink A LOT of fluid, probably 40 cups a day consistently. A good rule of thumb for adults (25-50) fluid is 35 ml/kg of body weight per day. Adolescants - 40-60 ml/kg of body weight per day and eldery 25-30 ml/kg body weight per day as their lean body mass is decreasing and they require less water.
