Why don't the labels add up?

I have noticed lately that many of the nutrition labels on my food don't add up correctly to the total amount of calories. For example suppose a food has 5 protein, 10 carbs, 5 fat, the food based on this should have 105 calories......

5 protein x 4 = 20 cals
10 carbs x 4 = 40 cals
5 fat x 9 = 45

I have noticed this with cantaloupe, and a few nutrition bars, the calories are less than what it should add up to be, anyone know why?

Re: Why don't the labels add up?

I think there are some loopholes companies are using. Such as if something is less than 0.5g, then they can report it as 0. I know thats a big deal with Trans Fats, the label may say 0, but it could have 0.4g, and I think the FDA recommends like a MAX of 1.5g/day. This could lead to some confusion...

Re: Why don't the labels add up?

Well, I can see that accounting for a few cals, but I'm talking 50. Also I have a food nutrition scale that gives you the cals, fat, carbs, and protein of the food being weighed (you type a code in) and it dishes out the same type of thing on some foods. Weird?

Nutrition bars are notorious for playing games especially with the sugar alcohols and fiber.

Yes everything should add up as you added your numbers, bluehen.

But they LIE!
