Need Some Tips On How To Eat Healthy---always Sick

I am always getting sick. I have constant reoccuring sinus infections. Most of the time very low energy. Just this past month I got a sore throat, sinus infection and my doctor called me in an antibiotic. A few weeks later...it flared right up again...and this last time...I was on an antibiotic and got STREP THROAT while I was taking it. HOW IN THE WORLD DOES THAT HAPPEN. So today I had to go get another antibiotic and needless to say I feel really really crappy right now. Low energy, sore throat-with white patches all over the left side of my throat, body is aching horribly.

Now my question for you is.....what could I do to eat more healthy??? I am thinking maybe that is why my immune system is so bad and that is why I am getting sick everytime I turn around. I do not know what else to think....unless God just made me to be a sickly person that catches everything that comes along.

I do not eat that great all of the time. I work full time, am a single mother of a 2 yr old and have to eat on the go it seems.

What types of things could I be eating for breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner that is easy, healthy, and tastes pretty good. I get so bored with the same food...but I guess I can train myself to eat the same things if it is healthy for me and will help me from getting sick soooo much. I can not afford to keep getting so sick. So I am trying to think of ways to help myself and one of them is changing my diet.

Thanks

What do you eat in a normal day? Specifically.

If I may, do you request antibiotics a lot? For any kind of sickness? Did your mom request them for you when you were young? Taking antibiotics too often has been said to make you more sick in the long run. Primarily because your body has not had the opportunity to become immune to smaller, weaker diseases and has become more immune to the effects of the medication. I don't know how to reverse this trend, but you might benefit from some research on the web and with your doctor on how you might be able to boost your immune system.

I'm sorry I donít have anything in the way of diet advice for you, but I would think that diet can only improve your situation and I know there are many wise people here on this board that will be able to help you.

Good luck and feel better.

Well...for example today I had for breakfast 2 pop tarts, then for lunch some soup...for dinner...probably pasta and meat balls. But the way I feel now...I do not even feel like eating.

Sometimes for breakfast I will grab a coffee, or cheese crackers, for lunch...maybe chinese food, chick fil a sandwich, or something like that. Then for dinner maybe some chicken, some type of pasta ...usually those lipton processed bags of noodles, and a veggie of some kind...usually corn.

I drink mostly water and sweet ice tea....hardly ever soda, or anything like that.

On weekends...its bad...I usually eat pizza, or a hoagie, chicken strips....or something like that. Usually on the go...because I have so much stuff to take care of.

Bad about eating fast food---- Taco Bell, Wendy's, Arbys....when on the run.

Re: Need Some Tips On How To Eat Healthy---always Sick

Well I heard if you sick a lot, it is good to eat foods that is enriched with Vitamins C. Vitamin C will help your immune system. Also it act as a antioxidant, amino acid metabolism, and it increase infection resistance. Citrus products, dark green vegetables, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, and mangoes are great, those products have a lot of vitamins C.

For breakfast I would suggest:
A smoothies, healthy and you can use any the fruits I mention on top. Like for example strawberries soy smoothies. Or mix it up strawberries mangoes smoothies with some granola in it.

For lunch I would suggest:
A sandwiches or salads, something light that will get you full. For example whole wheat bread with slice of turkey or any meat you want, with lettuce and tomatoes. Are just some lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, and red bell pepper salad with some grilled chicken is good. Go light on the dressing. Drink plenty of waters too.

For Dinner I would suggest:
The way you cook foods is very important too. Grill, broil, poach, steam, and bake foods are very good, because you using minimum fats. I hope this help. Good Luck

I just wanted to tell you that I used to be the same way - ALWAYS ill with something! I got cold after cold after cold, and anything else going around. In the 6 months I've been working out and eating healthy, I haven't had a thing! So there is hope for you.

Re: Need Some Tips On How To Eat Healthy---always Sick

i'm not good with nutrition and stuff but i have a nutrition specialist to help me(she's kind of annoying though calling me each day asking what i eat and what i did). I use to have low energy too but now i don't. From months of her calling me and asking me my daily condition i now have a little knowledge. For energy, cut down on foods like pasta, white rice, white bread. Starch makes you tired. I have to go in today for a checkup with my nutrition specialist so i'll help you ask.

From what you have listed above, you're not really eating well at all. You need to bulk your breakfast up with healthier wholesome foods and poptarts don't count. Try having a bowl of whole grain cereal (i.e Shreddies), a boiled egg (you can boil 1/2 a dozen of them and keep them in the fridge), a glass of orange or grapefruit juice and a piece of fruit.

If you have a sandwich for lunch, that's a good base, but you need to add some fresh fruits and veggies in there and maybe a glass/carton of milk. I wouldn't recommend eating Chinese food for lunch everyday - high in sodium and fat.

Supper doesn't look great either, try to cut down on the processed foods you eat. If you're going to have pasta, try making wholewheat pasta with a base sauce of Pregu and add some grilled chicken. Add a side salad, a glass of milk and some fruit for dessert and you've got a meal.

Also, just to let you know, sweet ice tea if it's like Brisk or Lipton is just as bad as soda. High in calories and low in good nutrients. Try drinking just water, add some lemon for vitamin C.

I'm sure you are very busy, but you can eat healthy on the run! It just takes some organizing. I am a very busy professional (work 40 hours a week), I work out at least three times a week, coach a community soccer team, + have the house and boyfriend to take care of and I make sure that 85% of the time I eat very healthy! You can do it! Do you know how to cook? If you don't maybe you could take a cooking course or read some recipe books!

Good luck!

I hope your diets will help you fight off the sickness. I haven't take any vitamins, I just eat foods that is enriched with that certain vitamins. Beside I really don't trust certain vitamins pills. Do you actually believe what the lables say? Well if you want to try it, I guess it wouldn't hurt.

Re: Need Some Tips On How To Eat Healthy---always Sick

Hi,

First off, I completely understand that this is not a weight loss board. The point I'm trying to make stems FROM my quest for weight loss, but what I found out is that my diet was actually making me sick ALL over, head to toe for years.

After reading your letters, I can almost pinpoint what the trouble is because you're story is similar to mine. I was sickly for YEARS: extreme fatigue, irritable, depressed, severe PMS, suffered from "brain Fog", bloating after eating, on/off antibiotics for UTI's and sinus infections, and unable to loss any weight. I had gone from one Dr. to another, always given a pill. Still felt lousy though.

In February, I had finally had it with my weight problem and decided to get tested for allergies (at the suggestion of a herbal remedy book for weight loss). It stated if I found out which foods I was allergic to and eliminated them, my weight would stabilze. Well it turns out I'm allergic to yeast. I went out and bought the book "The Yeast Connection Handbook". In the first few pages, I learned that not only my weight problem was a direct result of my allergy, but that ALL OF MY OTHER SYMPTOMS WERE TOO!!!

Yeast allergy/intolerance is caused by overuse of ANTIBIOTICS (once your GI flora is out of whack, yeast multiplies and gives off toxins breaking down your immune system...that why you feel sick). To learn more, I started a thread on the weight loss board back in March. I've been posting my progress which has been: A 15 pound weight loss, no more depression, energy I never knew I had, no more mood swings, more drive and motivation to do things, and just overall well being and finally having found happiness.

If you get the chance, check out this book. I'm sure you'll have the same reaction as I did...it felt like SOMEONE had finally understood what I was going through for so many years and God had finally answered my prayers.

Re: Need Some Tips On How To Eat Healthy---always Sick

Rich7: You need to add more fresh veggies and fruits to your diet. It seems like you are eating on the go and perhaps missing a lot of the foods you should be eating. Fast foods should be removed entirely from your diet as they really don't add any nutritional value to your daily intake. They put so much preservatives in their food, its amazing there is even food left. Did you ever notice that a "fast food" burger or fries never "rot or mold"? Its because they are loaded up with preservatives. Those preservatives cannot digest in your body. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself before you eat it (and know the answer - not guess) "if it doesn't rot or sprout" don't eat it!! Try juicing (but be careful of the sugar content) as it is easy to do and gives you a HUGE boost of fresh whole foods. Take celery and carrot sticks with you on the go (they even have them in the grocery store already peeled and ready to eat). Also, you may want to try seeking out a holisitic doctor that will treat you with probiotics instead of antibiotics. Good luck and keep us posted.

All great advice. I would like to add garlic and green tea. The benefits of both are astronomical. If you are having problems with your immune system, 5 to 6 cups of green tea and 3 cloves of minced up fresh garlic with meals will help tremendously. Garlic is the world's strongest natural antibiotic that has no side effects. Green tea's health benefits could be written in a book. There are just too many to name. Actually check out my thread about green tea and garlic....you might have to check a few pages back to find it. But I listed all their benefits. Also ginger tea is good. Try em out and let us know!

Re: Need Some Tips On How To Eat Healthy---always Sick

Well, I dont know if what you are eating is making you ill, you should definitly get checked out. I'm all for advocating a meat-free diet but its your choice obviously. From what you stated you eat, it seems to me that you eat alot of meat, fast food and things that are high in sodium. You definitly should incorporate more veggies and fruits into your diet, drink some green tea like The Len mentioned. You could take a multi-vitamin if you wish, I take a B-complex right now but I sometimes take individual vitamins and minerals. Try to eat as much green leafy veggies as you can and cut down on the sodium such as the lipton noodles and the fast food. Anything in moderation is okay just as long as you dont eat the same thing all the time. Please dont eat fast food, its so unhealthy for you...if you must eat it get a salad, or only eat there once in a while. Making homemade pizza is good! (try onions and broccoli without sauce...dont put pepperoni on it) As for having corn as a veggie, well lets just say corn is very starchy so try and pick a veggie that has benefits such as green beans, squash, broccoli or asparagus. Even have a sweet potato (if you like them, I personally love em). Hope this helps, if you have any questions id be happy to answer or elaborate
