Beauandzoe,

See if you can find a market with an ethnic flair, or an OLD pharmacy. THere is a product called SCOTT'S EMULSION which is an emulsified fish oil that tastes GOOD. I used to take it as a kid because the president at the time, Tom Jefferson, recommended it.
I JUST saw it at my local ShopRite so I know it's still made!

Re: How do you get children to take omega 3 oils?

The easiest way is to make a smoothie and add the flaxoil to it. My favorite recipe is to crush about a cup of ice in blender with an ice-crush feature, add 1 scoop of a good quality whey protein (vanilla or chocolate) 1 cup of frozen fruit, (banana's my fave) a tbsp of flaxoil and enough cold water for it all to mix (about 1/2 - 1 cup cold water). It comes out like a thick milk shake.

Get a 8-10 serving popsicle tray and pour the smoothie in it and stick popsicle sticks in the centers and place in freezer untill they freeze, to make some smoothie pops. These make a great treat.

You can add yogurt to the smoothie, frozen berries, peaches, pears, apples or whatever fruit your child likes best. The frozen fruit helps to make it thicker.

It takes 9 - 1000mg capsules to equal 1 tbsp of the flaxoil and they are very large gel capsules, probably too big for a child to swallow.

You can add flaxoil to cooked cereal but don't use it to cook in a recipe, as it turns rancid.

The previous poster was relating to flax oil, but you can also use her idea for the fish oil also. Fish oil is great for the brain(flax is too but not as good as fish oil) and many other things. I usually put the "Norweigen" brand flavored with lemon in my 2 year old's juice. I give her half of my dose which is a little less than a half of a teaspoon, and she don't even notice it.

You could also just use ground flax in your cooking and that should give them the omega-3 they need.

I give my girls the capsules and they swallow them. I don't find the capsules as good as the liquid though.

I give my son Nordic Naturals DHA supplement for kids. It is capsules that can be chewed and release the oil with a strawberry flavor. He loves them and he is very picky. They also carry lemon flavored Omega complex ones.
