Angry My doc said he thinks it's my diet?!?!

Yah,
I went to the doc today to inform him about my symptoms which is constipation, flautulence, bloating, and some discomfort...well he told me that i'm not eating enough fiber!! After I told him that I take a little bit of a fiber supplement in the morning, eat lots of fruit, I told him I don't eat TOO many raw veggies but mostly jucies, or cooked vegiies...also told him that I eat beans, eat yogurt, not too much meat, bla bla bla. He said, "What kind of fruits?" And I said, cantelope, strawberries, oranges, usually. He goes, "Well that's why cause your not eating enough "raw veggies"(mind you I drink the juice and usually eat them cooked), and he also said that I should choose plums, peaches, apples, and prunes as my fruits. I told him that I don't think it's my diet cause I take this supplment, eat fruits and veggies(even though they aren't ALWAYS raw). So, I'm getting a blood test on Wednesday..called an antigladin and antiendomysial(antibodies to gluten, sound familiar Losec?) and a CBS and TSH(thyroid) for my fatigue since i've been feeling very fatigued lately. I don't think it's my thyroid although it's extremely hard to lose these 5 pounds and I eat very little..so it COULD be! ANd that's odd for me cause I usually have TONS of energy. I initially told him that it could possibly be a food intolorance like lactose or gluten...he said that HE could handle the gluten/antibody test but a GI specialist will do the lactose. He also said if these tests come up negative then he'll refer me to a GI specialist. He doesn't think it's lactose but didn't object to the gluten test. He just seemed like he didnt care and thought it was my diet!!!! YAAAAH RIGHT!!! Anyways, I thought that I'd let you guys know.

Well, the prepard foods are without preservatives from whole foods and have been eating VERY clean lately although not completely "gluten free". I feel okay today believe it or not...it's like an off and on thing. I did give up cottage cheese too.
And, I thought that your symptoms were weight loss, diahrrea, and acid reflux. Celiac disease symptoms are a little different that mine right? Unless there really ARE cases where constipation is the culprit. I do feel bloated a lot, discomfort, and constpated. Did you ever see that commercial where the women show their tummy's and they complain of being bloated and constipated?...the drug being advertised was called "Zelnorm" for women? Do you know of ANYONE that has those symptoms as a result of a gluten intolorance??? Could it really be gluten?? For some reason I don't think so since i don't have diarrhea and weight loss but it's definitely worth a try( and I will always continue to watch out and avoid gluten as much as I can). Do you think that a thyroid test is necessary???

I couldn't go to the lab that he referred me to today for the blood tests but I could go anytime this week. I may either go tomorrow or wednesday. I'll let you know on this thread. Anyways, try to answer my questions if you could, thanks.

Oh and a few more questions, should i eat gluten before I go? He didn't even tell me if i should or shouldn't.
And, will I get the results THAT day or have to wait? Sorry for all of the questions, lol. Oh and does antiemdomysial test sound familiar to you? you never answered me, thanks.

Re: My doc said he thinks it my diet?!?!

So your sister had constipation or diahrrea? I WILL definitely keep you posted. This has been going on and off for too long. My only downfall is pizza and pasta, lol. I eat it about 2X a week(like 2 pieces of pizza OR pasta) but it's one of my favorite foods and I still eat it and those foods are my ONLY problem, not so much bread. I know i'm bad, lol!
I guess i'm gonna have to be the odd ball in the family and eat somtin else.

So you never hearnd of antiendomysial/antigliadin antibody test? I heard of the antiglidian but not the antiendomysial test???

How did you get tested?

Do you think it will be an accurate diagnosis from the blood test? Sometimes it's not always correct and i'm a little worred about that. I think you had a colonoscopy done. Sorry for all the ?'s but you seem to know your stuff!!

I just checked out the nutritional disorder boards and read on the gluten thread from a poster indicating that he heard on the radio that gluten intolorance sufferer's are usually from an Irish/sweedish heritage and i'm 50% Irish! (also polish and French) WHat do you think about that???

Re: My doc said he thinks it my diet?!?!

The doctor could well be right. It could just be your diet and inadequate fiber for you. Some people need much more fiber than others. You just have to listen to your body. In my family, I have to eat a lot more fiber, maybe twice as much, as my sisters! You'd think that sisters would likely have systems quite a bit alike, but that sure isn't the case in this regard.

Try eating legumes more often - garbanzo beans, kidney beans, lentils, peas and the like. Make soups or salads from them. Add a few beans to the top of your green or mixed vegetable salads. Increase the amount of legumes you eat gradually, though, or you will REALLY have problems with flatulence.

Try eating big salads. My lunches are often just one big salad with some combination of veggies such as baby spinach (instead of lettuce; it is more nutritious), celery, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, asparagus, onions, bell peppers, carrots and the like, usually topped with garbanzo beans and sunflower seeds. You can add some protein food like tuna or cooked chicken, if you like. It is easy, you don't have to be a great cook to do it, and it will provide plenty of fiber and vitamins/minerals. If you prefer your vegetables cooked, though, that's okay. You still get fiber. You just have to choose the right vegetables, though.

Eat whole grain, rather than white, breads and cereals. I used to get constipated after eating pasta or other white-flour products all the time until I learned that I could have those foods provided I also ate foods in the same meal with lots of fiber - a big salad or prunes, for example.

Another food which causes constipation for many is cheese. It is okay to eat, just keep serving sizes down and combine it with foods that have lots of fiber.
