i was just wondering -- i know that soda of course is awful for you. im not a big soda drinker at all, but from time to time i do drink diet soda. i know its not water (which i usually drink 5-6 bottles of a day), but what is so bad about it? i've heard that its the carbonation and that even carbonated water is bad for you. i know this is true, but i dont understand why. does anyone have any answers/feeback on this???

According to my dentist, carbonated beverages can leech calcium from the teeth (and it followed that that would potentially happen in the rest of the body) so he recommends that his clients will real cavity problems not drink them.
In addition, many sodas have phosphoric acid. This also is claimed to leech nutrients out of the body.
Carbonation produces gas in the stomach and can interfer with digestion. It also promotes an acid balance which promotes osteoporosis. The artificial sweeteners are the worst with the phosphoric acid (bone loss)next in terms of why you should not drink sodas.
Diet soda also contains aspartame, and if you do a quick search online, you'll see a lot of controversy about its safety. Yes, phospahtes leach calcium from your bones so if you're worried about osteoporosis, steer clear of it.
i just got to work and checked all your replies (yes these boards keep me sane at this desk job haha) and i just want to say thank you for all your helpful feeback! i'm a big believer in moderation, so i will prob still drink diet soda from time to time (right now its about once a week, sometimes less) but i will definitley keep all that in mind. thanks again! happy healthy eating everyone!

Mineral water doesn't have artificial sweeteners, phosphoric acid or other artificial ingredients. It may be carbonated but bottled spring waters are often not as free from contaminents as you might like. I prefer purifed water by a reverse osmosis process.
