High fructose corn syrup and its effects on the body?

I was recently checking the labels of a lot of the foods that are in the grocery stores. High fructose corn syrup was in a lot of the foods. I've read about how they have done studies to link the high amount of high fructose corn syrup that a lot of people consume, to the increasing number of overweight people in the US. High fructose corn syrup is a real cheap way for food makers to sweeten foods. I was wondering, if more people would cut high fructose corn syrup out, or lessen it significantly, do you think the amount of overweight people in the US would decrease? It's amazing how food makers are allowed to put so much junk into foods such as MSG, tons of artificial things such as flavorings, colorings, etc.

Re: High fructose corn syrup and its effects on the body?

If people cut down on their intake of high fructose corn syrup, would they lose weight?

Not exactly. Fact of the matter is, this sweetner is mostly found in processed foods. The manufacturers of these foods would just find something else to put in their product, and it most likely wouldn't be healthy. If it is used to preserve food for the long shelf lives that are desireable, most likely it's not well broken down in our bodies, afterall.

It all boils down to avoiding processed foods, imho. Virtually all diets agree that whole, unrefined, minimally processed foods are best. Sadly, refined sugars and products are exceptionally cheap and very convenient, making them very popular.

I agee with this last paragraph. Sweeteners can serve preservative functions but most packaged foods are crammed with chemical preservatives and long shelf life trans fatty acids. Corn syrup is a particular baddie. Your body has a limited ability to process fructose because there was limited amounts in the diet for all of evolution before agriculture. Your liver is needed to process fructose and thats where prolems can begin. Increased cholesterol is just a symptom of the ill effects of too much fructose. Most people today are eating huge amounts of corn fructose in processed foods and in sodas. When the corn lobby found corn sweetener could be used as a cane or beet sugar substitute the amount of this sugar in the SAD went to the moon and waistlines soon followed. It is far easier to take in excess calories by drinking than eating. Especially if you are eating fresh, minimaly processed healthy foods.

I think the public should be better informed about the harmful things, such as MSG, artifical flavorings and colors, etc. that are in a lot of the groceries in the supermarkets.
