I don't know any doctors that really understand diet and nutrition. I feel that it's more than calories that makes the difference. It's the type of food that we eat. I hope that you have a good doctor, although.... I hope he didn't get you discouraged.
I found that this works. It's so simple. Try eating natural foods and exercise about three hours a week. You can either walk or run with this exercise. Natural foods are the foods that are not processed. I follow a low meat diet; however some eat a lot more meat. There's so many different opinions on this.
I lost about 25 pounds somewhere nearly 18 years ago, and have kept it off. I'm the same weight (or nearly so) as when I was a teenager. I don't look like the typical American "couch potato" adult. There is a solution and it can be done, but it involves a complete lifestyle change.
In my opinion, to be successful you only have to achieve small goals each year. You don't have to reach the final goal; just enjoy the journey. If you lose say 20 pounds in a year, and are more healthy and fit, then you are successful.
The benefits are more than just looking good. Improved lifestyles, which include not smoking, can greatly contribute to the reduction of cancer, diabetes, and arthritis.
