Wheat bread

Is all wheat bread created the same ?

I was at a diner recently and upon ordering whole wheat toast, I was told by a co-diner, that it's 'the same' as white bread, i.e. - no specific nutritional benefits over white bread...Not that wheat bread itself is no better, but that the usual 'whole wheat' bread, especially the kind offered at diners wouldn't offer any real benefit.
Can someone(s) confirm/deny this ?

Yes, "wheat bread" is no more nutritious than white bread (in fact, sometimes it is just white bread dyed brown!) unless it specifies that it is "100% whole wheat" bread. If it is, it will say that on the package: 100% whole wheat.
Any bread can say that it's "wheat bread"... after all, all bread is made of wheat.
But only breads made with 100% whole wheat flour are allowed to say "100% whole wheat".
Roman Meal is a good one.
Also, you can read the ingredients; make sure "whole wheat flour" is the first ingredient listed, not white flour, bleached flour, or just plain "flour".

Pretty much the same thing. That's the way I look it.
Differences involve addition of a little of the BRAN to make it look dark and crunchy, but nutritionally, there's littlle difference.

Depending on how it's handled though, bread can be the boring puffy homogeneous WONDER bread that tastes like it should be used for wall insullation or a delicious crusty, yeasty French bagette thqat tastes like GOD visiting your mouth.

"Whole wheat" bread has been reduced to something of a health marketing gimmic. It's just bread...that costs a little more.

It's very akin to brown vs. white rice.

Like has been said, 100 percent whole wheat bread is supposed to be more nutritious than bread that is just labeled as wheat bread, or whole wheat bread. Whole Grain bread is better for you than whole wheat types of bread though.

I've been getting a 9 grain bread made by Pepperidge Farm, which doesn't have high fructose corn syrup in it and some of the other junk. A lot of the breads I looked at, at the grocery store, had high fructose corn syrup in them. I'd try to avoid that junk ingredient.

By the way, what is ******* bread?
