i see all the time people who are on these supposedly "healthy eating plans" that they include fruits in them; HOWEVER, i am trying to lose about 10 lbs and i was told that fruit keeps you from losing weight.... is this true??? i've heard it just packs on the pounds due to the sugar content--- i'm just really confused so i have not been eating fruit, just lean turkey, chicken breast, and tuna fish, and salads- does anyone know the REAL answer about fruit??? thanks
In my opinion, fruit can be abused. I don't think it should be eaten all day long, but it is healthy, and, calorie wise, much better than white sugar. It does serve a purpose. I eat about 3 servings of fruit a day, but about 6 servings of veggies.
I'm pretty sure fruit doesn't "stop" you losing weight. I think it is more the fact that a lot of people go on a "diet" and think that if they eat lots of fruit then that will help. However, they tend to forget that fructose (natural sugar found in fruits) is still sugar and if you eat enough fruit, you may as well be shovelling in a couple of tablespoons of actual sugar!
But you certainly shouldn't cut fruit out of a healthy diet on the basis that you want to lose weight.

Fruit will definitely NOT keep you from losing weight. The theory of the sugar content being resonsible for weight gain is misplaced. Sugar causes weight gain mainly because of its effect on your insulin levels. Large amounts of sugar spike insulin levels, and when insulin levels are high, your body tends to store fat. That is what lead to the whole creation of the Glycemic Index. Foods with a high GI rating causes more rapid insulin spikes. Fruits, although they contain fair amounts of sugar, are not high on the glycemic index. They do not cause rapid, high, insulin spikes. Most fruits contain fiber which is a natural reducer of insulin, and is very effective at aiding in fat loss. Fruit is very healthy and consuming 3-6 serving daily will not hurt your weight loss in a properly structured diet.
Eat two fruit per day. More than that will likely cause bloating and may tax your liver.
Eat more vegetables than fruit, about 4-6 serving per day.
Fruit in itself is healthy and will not casue your diet to fail. Eating too many calories is what casues diets to fail. It makes little difference to where these extra calories come from. If you eat more that you use, you will gain weight.
