Re: acid out of coffee

Probably not. Since all the acids found in coffee are weak acids, it would be practically impossible and impractical to try do it yourself. The only way I could think is with high pressure steam or some sort of slow distillation process, but nothing I can think of doing yourself.

There are a lot of different acids in coffee at varying strengths, but none are strong. So if you try to neutralize them somehow, that won't work because the equilibrium would always leave some on the acid side. Plus, what would you do with whatever you neutralized it with?

Besides that, even caffeine is a weak acid itself.

If you really can't handle coffee as is, ie with stomach issues, and you really like coffe, you can purchase (I believe?) coffee that has had a lot of the acids removed.

This may seem strange (or maybe not) but many beverages have a high relative potential of acidity.

BEVERAGES:

Liquor.........................-28.6 to -38.7

Fruit juice sweetened with white sugar.........................-33.4

Tea (black).........................27.1

Coffee.........................-25.1

Wine.........................-16.4

Fruit juice, packaged, natural.........................-8.7

NON-BEVERAGE PRIZE WINNER:

Vinegar......................-39.4
