Question Boyfriend had tongue cut out etc need food ideas please?

HI ALL
Was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas to help feed my new B/Friend when he comes to stay in the next few weeks ?

He has had a horrendous 2 years with numerous operations to cut out cancer..

I know half his tongue was removed & the lower jaw, and had all his teeth pulled out before the operation, due to the op..

is just getting used to false teeth (upper and lower) .. and can't eat or chew anything,

he was saying tonight he is just starting to vaguely taste some things,
not much though , as he had no tastebuds..,
so I'm pleased to try him out with my favourite coffee..

he can have soup, or ground up steak or soft veges with lots of gravy to help it go down.. he has to be careful not to choke.. ..

I thought of an omelet, (which he said he likes,) or scrambled eggs,
I think he can manage icecream , ( I said with chopped up soft ripe strawberries in season,.. would be nice )

I want to have some recipe ideas ready to try out before he comes..

I would like to surprise him to a visit at our Local Restaurant for a soft mousse or cheesecake

( I could have the biscuit base , he the soft cheesecake part.)

Any ideas you have would be gratefully appreciated..

Thank You.. CB xxxx xx

Re: Boyfriend had tongue cut out etc need food ideas please?

First off, I'm very sorry to hear about all your boyfriend's health problems. That would be a very serious adjustment to have to make. I can't compare my problems to his, but, because of 3 TMJ surgeries, I have had to go 6 months to a year without chewing for all 3 of those. I'm glad you are wanting to be adventurous. I ended up just eating the standards: oatmeal, cottage cheese, soft scrambled eggs, pudding, yogurt, ice cream, mashed potatoes and sometimes hamburger crumbles. Not being able to chew and having to worry about choking makes it very hard. Also, I had the ability to crush things against the roof of my mouth with my tongue, and he doesn't. So, I would be very careful. I think cheesecake out would be fine.

I hope you get some answers. You might try the TMJ board since a lot of us can't chew like normal people. Good luck.

wow....first off I'm terribly sorry for your boyfriend, and I hope he's able to make a full recovery. He's lucky to have a girlfriend who cares so much about him to look for something good to feed him!
How about chili? with mac or without.....
macaroni and cheese
oatmeal
cream of wheat or rice
grits
fruit smoothies?
if I think of something else, I'll be back!

Re: Boyfriend had tongue cut out etc need food ideas please?

Thank you both for your replies..

Firstly I haven't even met him yet !! haaahaaa...

.. we've been communicating by phone or email and decided we want to
meet each other..

We have so much in common, both want to write a book about our trials
and tribulations , he's a writer, and I have a lot of stories of interest.. ..

He's the way HE is, and I'm in a wheelchair,
so it will be a very interesting meeting with LOTS of laughter !! ..

and not much sleep to be had..
I'll consult him with what you said, and find out if he can eat that,

I thought porridge and milk with brown suger is nice cos that's what I
love..
I'm not sure about macaroni cheese as it might not go down his gullet very
well ( choke) but I'll ask him..

I was wondering if he'd like a little piece of chocolate to melt in his mouth,
as a treat, but even that might be hard for him.. ??

I'll look on here tomorrow and see how it goes,..
I've got a bit of time anyway, to copy down recipes..

Thanks so much.. CB xxx

Hi All.. I asked my friend if he can have yoghurt and runny custard , yes.. but not all fruits.. ,the fibre in them coud be tricky

he can't swallow food properly as he has only 1/2 his tongue,..
it's amazing how we don't think about eating , we just DO it !!

He likes steak and kidney moullied up , can manage that,
Ripe mashed bananas, possibly , he would have to make sure there was plenty of fluid with them as he could choke ..

he does enjoy a wine, but needs to be careful,
( not of the wine;.. of the glass.. )

he knocked it over his computer after having 72 silicone needles and novacaine ( numbing) into the scar tissue on his arm & leg at the hospital where they'd taken grafts..was woozy after it was done.. ..

he can have runny porridge, but doesn't like it due to too much given when he was a kid.. he was at boarding school !! Don't blame him..

he did say because he's on his own he doesn't feel like cooking so much, but he knows he needs to put on some weight .. 6'2''..and skinny.. as

I hope to remedy that.. but his Mum does give him stuff he puts in the freezer ..

the refried beans maybe not, He can't have peas either..

it's because he can't swallow properly, which if you think about the actions he hasn't got a long enuff tongue and our tongue actually touches the roof of mouth when you swallow..

he's only finding his tastebuds again,
so I might make that trip to a restaurant.. a wee bit of soft cheesecake might do him good.,
I'll have the base.. . and he can eat the soft bit.. ;-)

well thank u all for your help,... I've learnt a lot, and still learning..

Gonna study recipe books at the weekend..

Cheers.. CB

Re: Boyfriend had tongue cut out etc need food ideas please?

Hi there! Many recipes can be put in a blender and blended to cream consistency! Many fruits and vegetables cooked grains and beans can be blended to cream consistency! A little seasoning helps a bit. Sweet tastes he probably won't have much of, but I am curious if he would be able to taste salt or sour and since bitter flavors are usually in the back of the tongue that is what he will mostly have. For enzymes coming from raw foods I have personally juiced most fruits or vegetables. If a person buys the press type of juicer instead of the flywheel even some leafy vegetables can be juiced to get small amounts of nutrients that otherwise might be hard for a person with a cut out tongue to get. Health to all
