Avocado question

I bought 3 large avocados that looked normal and were firm, not overripe. But when I cut them open they were dark blackish-brown inside. They were like wood on the inside and inedible. Why did that happen? Were they picked too soon? About ten days ago I bought 3 from the same store and they were perfect. What could cause such a difference?
