Help, please. What to buy for food at the store?

Living in a poor town with only one grocery store. I see these foods and mostly they are tv dinners not many vegetables. I have been living off of tv dinners for a long time but i am concerned with the salt. I have read that craving salt means you are lacking serotonin in your brain.

I.. need advice on how to get the right and healthy diet I do NOt know what to buy when i enter a store. Living far away , would it be wise to just order foods from NeutraSystem?

There are no fresh fruits or vegetables in your grocery store?

How about frozen veggies or fruits?

Yes, but not a variety, not many vegetables and fruits to choose from. They mostly have frozen dinners, loaded with salt..

Those dinners are not good. How is the selection of canned veggies and fruit?

Re: Help, please. What to buy for food at the store?

Hi in the summer time is there room for a garden? Can a fruit or nut tree be grown nearby?
In the summer time is there a fruit/ vegetable stand on the side of the road?
Can money be put aside for the purpose of canning and buying fruit/veges in bulk?

Canned fruits and veggies are not much good for you; frozen is better, "good selection" or not.
Surely they have frozen broccoli?

Get some oatmeal (regular, not instant), some dried beans, peas, or lentils, some whole grains, if they have any: brown rice, barley.

Look on the internet, get some soup recipes. Buy a bread machine and bake whole grain bread to go with it.

Health is not only about fruits and vegetables.
There are other ways to get fiber, and the vitamins in fruits and veggies can be gotten from supplements, in a pinch.

Try to reduce salt, sugar, fat, and meat.
Drink lots of water; tap water is best, if you live in an area where it's fluoridated.
Tap water has minerals that bottled water doesn't have.

Good luck.

Re: Help, please. What to buy for food at the store?

Hi I agree with Kali as far as frozen foods if it can be done they may contain more vitamins than canned ones. Canned ones in jars are better than metal if jars can be obtained.

It might be possible to order some things on line but if one is poor the postage also costs.
Does this small store have whole wheat flour? I wonder if the store might special order anything for a person. A medium size store here was willing to order a whole case of something for me if it could be obtained. Sometimes they will do it if the request is in bulk. For example a whole case of say Apples or Georgia peaches. Sometimes people bend over backward to help.

Re: Help, please. What to buy for food at the store?

At one point, I was very poor. My housemates and I could barely manage to make the rent and feed ourselves anything, but one of them was very resourceful. She got a bag of alfalfa seeds, and twice a week she would take 3 tablespoons full and sprout them in the pantry with a little water. Then we'd eat the sprouts. That plus rice, beans and cheese, and a little bit of other fresh stuff, made for a very cheap diet that still kept us healthy.

Re: Help, please. What to buy for food at the store?

I know a lot of counties have a organic box system, they will supply the best in season veggies once a week or month, I think I would go with something like this other than NeutraSystem, do you not have a big store that does home delivery? again this could be cheaper than NeutraSystem
Risotto is also a good rice and cheap meal dish.

Both excellent ideas. My mother bought a share in an organic farm collective, and for 6 months out of the year, she gets a box of fresh local organic vegetables every week. The farmer delivers to one house in her town, then she goes over there and fetches her box.

My grandmother gets almost all her groceries delivered by Peapod, because she hates her local grocery store with a passion. (Also, in my grandfather's last months, she didn't leave the house much.)

Hi so I take it that tiny store might be able to order some things from a distance, maybe by the case?
