H Pylori treatment help? Advice needed

Hi,

I have been experiencing on and off symptoms of heartburn and nausea for the past few months. About a year ago me and my sister started having episodes of vomiting very frequently especially in the middle of the night. This eventually stopped though, but ever since this incident these symptoms occur every day. I do not have any abdominal pain. It's all just frequent nausea and a burning like feeling in my chest/ down my threat.

Sometimes these symptoms would become so severe, and none were really improving so I decided to schedule an appointment with a GI to see what was going on. She prescribed me 40 mg of Omeprazole to take once before breakfast daily because she thought I had acid reflux. She also recommended that I took a stool test to send to the lab in case I tested for H Pylori, a bacteria that can cause ulcers. I took the Omeprazole for about 2 weeks, until I got a phone call from my GI one night who told me that my results were positive for the H Pylori. I was happy because I finally knew the source of my pain.

So, along with taking the Omeprazole once daily, she prescribed me the antibiotics Clarithromycin (500 mg) 2x a day for 14 day and Amoxicillin (500 mg) 2x a day for 14 days as well. The first 2 or so days I had diarrhea but by the next day the diarrhea disappeared. My symptoms were also slowly disappearing. I am now on my second to last day, but throughout the course of this medication there were some days where I felt like the medicine wasnt being very effective and the heartburn and nausea was very prominent. All these symptoms come and go, there is no specific time.

My GI says she wants to see me 2 weeks after finishing the medication. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be the last dose of the triple therapy treatment, and I am not feeling completely 100% better. Of course I feel much better compared to before taking the medication, I still get the same symptoms from time to time. Is that normal? How long will it take for me to feel completely better?

Is the reason why she is making me come 2 weeks after finishing the medication because the medicine needs more time to take effect? Does my body need more time to fully heal after all this time of fighting the bacteria? Any help is appreciated, thank you so much for reading!

You are spot on! The medication will continue to kill off the bacteria. Keep in mind though though that you may have more than that one thing going on. So it's important to clear that one to see what, if anything, remains.

Another reason she may be waiting is to allow the antibiotics to leave your system and give any remaining bacteria, if any, time to regrow. This way, a recheck of your stool might show if the treatment was effective or not.
