Taking Nexium with OTC antacids - Digestive Disorders Message Board

I take a 40 mg Nexium once a day in the a.m. It helps some, but I notice that early in the morning when I first wake up the reflux is pretty bad. Can I take a couple of tums or something, even if on the Nexium?

I WAS TAKING NEXIUM 40MG IN THE MORNING AND 300 MG OF TAGAMENT IN THE EVENING. THE DR ALSO TOLD ME IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH TAK MAALOX OR SOMETHING ELSE.

Hi,
I take only 20mg of Nexium per day.
Always in the afternoon sometime between 2pm & 5 pm.
I have had really bad reflux problems for a number of years, & Ranitidine along with Gaviscon stopped working. Another PPI did not agree with me.
I am now on a months trial to see how I get along with Nexium.
My Gaviscon is still in the cupboard ---- but so far I have not needed any. I am not saying I am cured, cus I am not,
My diet is dull and boring, and
I am careful not to eat any product made with Tomatoes... No chocolate, curry, chilli, citrus fruit or drinks etc etc etc, plus no alcohol, coffee. Also I have only two cups of tea a day with low fat milk.
I try very hard not to over eat, which is difficult as I could eat for England. But I feel great.
Who said dull and boring wasn't good for you ?????.

I would wait about an hour after you take the Nexium, then pop a Gaviscon. That should be fine. You may also decide to try taking the Nexium at a different time of day and see if that helps. I took Nexium for a while, now I take Aciphex, at 3 or 4 pm each day. Works better than a morning dose for some odd reason.
