Has anyone's PPI just quit working for them? - Digestive Disorders Message Board

Anybody here have experience with taking a PPI that works for them and then just inexplicably stops working? Thanks.

We are not all the same and sometimes PPIs don't work the same for any length of time. I had one that never did work and the doc change me to Prilosec.
Also, my wife was changed because of the side effects with one first one she took.
So, I guess it is not that unusual??

Yes i was on zantac in my early 20s ,and in my middle 40s it started to not be as effectve as it once was.Then they switched me to prevacid,which seems to be workng fairly well.

Zantac is not a proton pump inhibitor of course it works differently. The common PPIs are Prevacid, Prilosec, Aciphix and Nexium.

My doctor has had me on Aciphex for the past 3 months. The other day I asked him if it was safe for me to continue taking it and my other drug, Bentyl, because it had already been all those months, and he replied that it was ok "for the rest of my life." This is totally different from everything else I've read on this board concerning PPIs. How safe/dangerous are PPIs, anyway? the doctor said Aciphex has been studied in people who've used it for years without side effects being reported. I don't know what to believe.
