Re: Magnesium as a Cure for Reflux

The medications like Gaviscon, Tums, Maalox all have forms of minerals that are not easily absorbed for nutritional purposes. They are used as anti-acids --- the carbonates. They are used as medication not as a supplement.

Every cell in your body has magnesium in it!!! 67% is in your bones and less than 1% in your blood.

Magnesium is in alot of foods but it is estimated that about 70% of people are deficient. When you take medication that interferes with your digestion, many nutrient as well as magnesium just does not get absorbed.

You need about 400 mgms of magnesium daily for all muscles in your body to function properly including your heart. If you take it 3 times daily you only get 30 to 40% absorbed. If you take it once daily you will only absorb about 10% and if you are taking medication that is messing up your digestion it's probably less than that.

I like and use the Magnesium Chelate that is bonded to a protein--amino acid glycine and lysine. I take Doctor's Best --- High Absorption Magnesium. This process is patented internationally by Albion Labs. They have a website that you can read about it. they sell it to many vitamin and mineral supplement manufactures. It is a very bioavailable range of minerals.
There are others on the market that I have tried but I have not found one any better but all supplements work to some degree and may be just as good!!!

Re: Magnesium as a Cure for Reflux

So, when's the best time to take magnesium? Do you take it with meals? Most of the supplements I've found sold in 250mg. So, will one tablet be enough? I also take a multi which has some magnesium in it. If this doesn't work, I guess I'll start nexium.

Re: Magnesium as a Cure for Reflux

Weight,
If you take magnesium once daily -- you will probably absorb from 2 to 8% of what it says on the container. It can be taken first with meals and at bed time in divided doses to increase absorption. Then will absorb up to about 40%.

You can buy good brands of magnesium supplements for what just a few Nexium pills cost. I think it is certainly worth a try.

A big problem with GERD is that stomach acid travels up your throat when sleeping --- many people have to raise the head of their bed 4 to 6" to prevent this.
Long term use of a PPIs is just not healthy. Vital nutrients that need acid for absorption are just not broken down in an alkaline stomach. Short term use is OK.

I wish you well---Harry

Re: Magnesium as a Cure for Reflux

Thanks, Harry. I'll give it a try. Most of my reflux seems to occur at night.

So Harry, If I was taking 250 mg of magnesium, would I then need to take this 250 mg tablet three times a day? This would give me, hopefully, absorption of 300mg of magnesium. Thanks!

I have had acid reflux since I was 20, I'm 24 now. I've been on PPI's for 3 years now, most notably Nexium for almost half of that time. Nexium worked perfectly at the start, I could eat almost anything again with no symptoms......then it started to not work as well.....and I started to wonder about long term effects. Funny how none of the doctors mentioned long term problems.

I only took half of a 40mg pill this morning and am going to take Mg, we'll see how this goes. I am going back to a specialist sometime soon and I'm hoping that he won't suggest more PPI's - first of all I've tried them all, second of all I'd rather treat the cause rather than the symptoms.

Anyways sorry for the ramble but I don't know anyone who has the same problems as me and suddenly I stumble upon this board.....I'm not so weird after all....kind of exciting really (in a not so good way I suppose)
Have you tried magnesium supplements ,yet? If so, have they helped? I'm 29 and have just recently been experiencing severe symptoms. H2 blockers seem to help. I have some nexium. But, I really don't want to take it.
