ph monometry/nissen fundoplication

Hi everyone,

I have received lots of great advice on these boards. I just had a couple of questions about a procedure and surgery that I am going to have later this month. I have been diagnosed with Barretts and my doctor will be doing a nissen fundo on me on December 23rd. Merry Christmas to me, right? Anyways, because of my schedule I needed this to be done before the end of January and this is the date we came up with. For people that have had this surgery, what type of recovery time is needed? I have requested a week off of work but I am worried that this will not be enough time. Your thoughts...? How is the pain and will I be able to eat afterwards? I hate broth. Can anyone give me some suggestions of food?

Also, I have read past threads about this ph monometry test and how it sucks bad. I have to admit that I am not looking forward to this at all but my surgeon told me that this was a great procedure used to "tailor" my nissen fundo.

I am really looking forward to ending my stomach pains. I have GERD and I regurgitate food in my mouth. Its awful. I sometimes wake up with bile in my nose and mouth. I have had this problem for years and have suffered throat problems, rhaspy voice, and a hiatal hernia due to this problem.

Thanks for all of your answers...have a great week!

Re: ph monometry/nissen fundoplication

Hi the 24ph test is not very pleasant, it is the worst of the standard tests for GERD. They will put the tube down you’re throat and its hooked unto a small computer for 24 hours. You are supposed to eat and be active........this is hard to do as all you want to do is lie on a couch and not eat much........Try and eat things that cause the reflux because if you don't the results will show no reflux and the doc will not do anything about it ! they will presume its in you’re head and or you may have to do the test again, this you do not want to do !!!!!

For the fundo - I would say a month or maybe more for recovery. Even if you are lucky and only spend 2 or 3 days in the hospital you will be living off liquids for a few weeks and another 2 weeks to eat mushy food. Plus you will need to recover from the pain killers and anesthesia. I do think a small percentage of people recover in a few weeks, but the majority take a month or so, and some take several months.

Re: ph monometry/nissen fundoplication

Hi, I had the 24 hour ph and the monometry test 5 years ago. They were not the most pleasant tests I ever had but they really weren't that bad. They are not painful just annoying. I had my surgery in Aug of 99. I only spent one night in the hospital and was eating the next morning. The biggest problem I had was esophageal spasms for about 6 weeks. The trick is to eat slowly and chew your food well. I think one week might be rushing it but it shouldn't take more than a few weeks it really depends what your job is. The surgery isn't bad really and the benefits are great. Good luck.
