Is it only extra acid?

For the last about 5 weeks my stomach has been bothering me, rumbling, just feeling upset, seems better when I eat or drink, and at night it,s the worst. I don,t think it,s acid reglux because its only the stomach, not the throat or anything. I went to the doctor she put me on acid reducers, she said it was likly stress induced for me. She also had me do an uper GI and that came out normal. For the first about 3 weeks the pills she gave seems to do a fabulous job everything was perfect, now for the past week, I have been having some syptoms at night again and during the day if my stomach is empty. Could the upper GI miss something, could it still be stress, could the pills reducing the acid cause another problem, I need to see her again next week and I will ask, but anyone else have this, or have any ideas. The meds she gave me are called Zantac, and they are taken 1x per day before bed. Sandra

The effect which Zantac had on your stomach suggests that your problem obviously come from rised acid secretion. Maybe the dosage isn't high enough. But rising the dosage is only temporary solution. Experienced GI specialist would hardly miss something important. Ask the doctor if the infection with Helicobacterr pylori bacteria (which is extremely common in "acid problems") could be an issue. This infection is not necessary seen in endoscopy, but there are some reliable easy to perform tests available to prove it. Treatment is with antibiotics (it takes some weeks).

Re: Is it only extra acid?

I went back to my GP last week and told her the symptoms were back and the urgent care doctor put me on Losec. She told me the Losec is better than the Zantac for GERD but maybe not as good for the acid in the stomach, I havwe been taking then and my stomach feels better but the burning feeling is not completely gone(still worse at night) I asked the doctor for an H Pylori blood test and she has ordered and abdominal ultrasound. Is that a normal type of test, it seens to be as I read down the digestive disorder site and several people seemed to mention having them. She said hopefully we can get this resolved without having to have the scope done. I just want to get this over with, I have been dealing with an inner ear type disorder(lightheadedness and stuff) for almost 6 months and that seems to be getting better and then this popped up it seems like nothing but problems for the last half a year. Re: Is it only extra acid?

Hi!
Ultrasound will eventually show a roughly changed wall of stomach, but bacteria itself has to be proved. I don't know if H. Pylori actually reaches the blood, so its presence in the stomach has to be proved. Most popular test is "urea breathing test". You will have to drink a kind of liquid I suppose and results will be obtained after some hours or so from your breath.
