Off and on nausea, fullness, days of being fine...

I am new to these boards. I was diagnosed several years ago with IBS, which I control with a cholesterol medecine, of all things!

For the past month and a half, I have had periods of nausea, fullness, indigestion, and also days when I have felt great. A lot of times, I get that "lump" feeling in my throat like I need to burp. Burping does help for a bit. Eating seems to help, too -- sometimes I have to force myself and sometimes my stomach is gurgling and I'm starving! I literally can feel okay one minute and lousy the next, and then okay again!

This happened to me about 3 years ago, and I had a colonoscopy that came back fine. The symptoms only lasted a few weeks that time and hadn't re-occured until now.

I had a full blood workup - including a CA125, which was 17. All 60 blood tests were fine. I am going on Monday for a CT scan of the pelvis and abdomen, and it that shows nothing, my doctor will be sending me to a gastro doctor.

My doctor put me on Prilosec in the morning and Zantac at night. I hae taken it for about a week, but it hasn't seemed to help much. Does it take time to work?

Can anyone shed any light on what this might be, or ease my mind a bit? I am one of those people who always thinks the worst and this is making me nuts! I'm sure half of the nausea is nerves!

Thanks for listening. Glad I found these boards!

Your symptoms sound very very similiar to mine.
However, now I have developed some vomiting at
times and diarrhea (sp?). I am taking Prevacid
and it seems to help some. What are you taking
for your cholesterol that would help IBS??

Loverton,

I take Questran, which is a powder that you mix with liquid. I have taken it for quite a few years and it does seem to help.

I am going for a Pelvic and Abdominal CT scan on Monday, so hopefully I will have some answers.

Are all the meds for acid basically the same or could it be that Zantac and Prilosec that I am taking aren't the right ones for me? I was thinking that all of them - Zantac, Prilosec, Prevacid, Pepcid - are all the same.

Have you had tests done? What did they show?

Zantac and pepcid are not the same as prevacid ,prilosec.Prevacid and prilosec are ppi's a stronger drug.Zantac and pepcid are acid reducers.Take care.

Your symptoms are exactly the same as mine. I was in awe when I read your post. I am going through a spell right now so I thought I would read some posts. I have gastritis and IBS and reflux. I take prevacid and carafate (sucralfate) which is a lot like questran only it soaks up excess bile which was causing my diarrhea and it's in pill form. Doesn't do anything for cholesterol. I also take xanax which calms me down when I get all upset and freaked out about feeling sick all the time. My question for you if you are female is do you notice any worsening of symptoms during your period up until mid month? Mine are so much worse the first two weeks and does a complete turn around the second two weeks. I actually feel better the second two weeks. I also am supposed to have a CT scan, but haven't scheduled it yet. I was supposed to have it the first week of January, but was on antibiotics for strep, then caught an intestinal virus and then a cold, so I didn't really feel like drinking any barium when I was already not feeling well. I'm going to try to schedule for February 18. It is a 4 day weekend from work for me. I, too, have had tons of blood tests, upper and lower scopes, ERCP, plain old x-rays, stool and blood cultures and one other CT scan. I guess he wants another one now. It's been a few years.

Did you have your CT scan today? How was it?

Re: Off and on nausea, fullness, days of being fine...

Wow...this is exactly how I'm feeling, too! Nausea, fine one minute and feeling crummy the next...sort of a weird feeling of discomfort in the abdomen, occasional lump feeling in the throat, but no pain.

I went to my GP and he sent me for upper GI test of stomach and duodenum, which showed no problems. Tried acid blocker pill for two weeks, which helped a tiny bit, but not much. I asked what the next step is and whether I could see a GI doctor, and the GP said, "Well, I don't really know what to tell you...without pain, it's tough to diagnose what might be wrong."

Does anyone else with this feel slightly better when massaging the abdominal area gently? I feel slightly better when I massage right under my sternum...if I press hard enough and get a really deep massage going, sometimes that makes me feel better for a few seconds. Anyone else?

Dave

Actually, now that I'm doing some more reading, I think what I have sounds like gastritis! :0 Hmmmm. I wonder if that could be it?

Re: Off and on nausea, fullness, days of being fine...

I also have the same symptoms, and a couple days ago hubby was at the dr.'s office with my son and the secretary mentioned that she remembered seeing the results of my endoscopy(biopsy) and she thinks it said gastritis. My symptoms are nausea(some days ok others worse), full feeling after only a few bites, burning on empty stomach, and sometimes a bloody taste in my mouth in the morning. I guess I will find out on the 1st of March when I go and see the gastro dr.

Re: Off and on nausea, fullness, days of being fine...

Donna, hope things work out for you. When you say that some nausea days are ok and some worse, do you also find (like I do) that the nausea can even vary *within* each day? I find that every few minutes the nausea comes and goes in small waves, especially if I suddenly get nervous. Every once in a while during a day I'll have a nausea attack for a few seconds, then it seems to subside.

It doesn't even really feel like *nausea* exactly; it's not like a feeling I'm going to vomit. It's just sort of a vague, crummy, malaise feeling. Does anyone else feel that way with gastritis?

Re: Off and on nausea, fullness, days of being fine...

canadave,
What I mean by "some days ok and others worse" is some days I feel little waves all day while others I almost feel like I want to vomit(but don't). I also find that when I am nervous it is a million times worse. There are even times when I have no nausea until I eat something then it comes back (that's probably the reason I went from 140 lbs down to 115).
Have you had an endoscopy done with a biopsy? That would tell you if you have gastritis.
A little OT but by any chance are you from Canada?

Donna,

No, I haven't had the endoscopy done...I guess that's my next step, although I'm not looking forward to the concept.....

I'm from NYC originally, but now I live in Canada, yes Just outside Edmonton.

Re: Off and on nausea, fullness, days of being fine...

Well hello fellow Canadian
The endoscopy really isn't that bad and this coming from someone who was awake through the whole thing. The worst part is when they spray the back of your throat with the numbing stuff...that made me gag horribly. I could even feel the scope being moved around in my stomach. Felt like butterflies.
My dad had it done also but he was asleep through the whole thing. I guess certain hospitals do it differently.
Hope you feel better soon!

Re: Off and on nausea, fullness, days of being fine...

HI Guys,
Your sypmtoms are so similar to mine. i ahve been sufferinf with the probelms since June of last year when I had H.Pylori. I have tons of blood test, an endoscopy, and abdominal CT scan (had an allergic reaction tot he iodine and was scik for 4 days) and many other things. I am only 20 and it is really interefeering in my llife. When I feel good, I feel good for about 2 weeks. But when I fell bad....I feel terrible.I get sever nausea and feel like I have to vomit, I have diarhea until I can't go to the restrrom anymore. Its terrribl.Mostly these episodes occur one week around my period. My GI specialist hadme on Aloe Ver which worked for a little while, but the problme found a way around it and has gooten back to normal. My stomach is ultra sensistive..no coffee, no fast food. I have to get a barium and I am scared that it will make me sick for a couple of days because my stomach does not do well with foredgn substances alothough I handle liquor fine! I have tried Protonix, Prevacid,Nexium,Zantac, Aciphex, MAgenessium Oxide ,AloE Vera and Acidolphillus and nothing has helped.SOmetimes I get soo depresed and want to die because of the interruption this has caused in my life.I try to remind myself that at least I dont have cancer but.....atleast people have cures for that. Well if anybody has found anything that helps, please let me know.

Re: Off and on nausea, fullness, days of being fine...

Canadave, I have that same crummy, vague feeling that I call "nausea" but it is more of just a weird, yucky feeling within me. I also get a gagging feeling in my throat and mouth.

BUT I do have actual nausea in the tummy a lot too. My doctor thinks I have Gastroparesis which means paralysis of the stomach. The symptoms are nausea, full feeling after eating, bloating, acid reflux, etc. The reflux happens because the food sits in the stomach so long with nowhere to go. Basically the stomach just works extra slow getting the food down. The nausea for me is usually about an hour after I eat but sometimes it happens randomly too.

You all might want to ask your docs about this. The symptoms you all list are symptoms of GP. And it can be intermittent, which means good and bad days, weeks, etc. The test for this is a gastric emptying scan where you eat a meal with radioactive substance and then they x-ray your tummy to see how fast the food moves thru. A normal tummy is supposed to digest 1/2 of the food in 90 minutes the test can take 90 minutes or longer. My scan actually came back NORMAL but the doc said that could have been a fluke and he still thinks I have it because of my symptoms.

In the meantime, you may feel better if you follow the GP diet of low fat and low fiber, as fats and fiber are harder to digest. Good luck everyone!
