Colonoscopy & Endoscopy... just a little nervous. - Digestive Disorders Message Board

Well, getting both done this Friday (scheduled it today) so a little nervous. I've read all the posts on here about folks who have gotten it done and said it was no big deal... I'm just worried since I have a really bad gag reflex. The damn xray wings at the dentist gag me and they usually have to use the kid's wings and I don't think I've ever gotten a throat culture.. just a ton of attempts.

When one is scheduled to get both done the same day.. which procedure do they usually do first or does it vary? Will I be nice and asleep when they do the colonoscopy first then break bad on the endo? Is there anything I can do the night before to make sure I stay asleep or not be anywhere near as nervous..

Sorry if this is the wrong forum.. wasn't sure if it'd be in the anxiety one or the digestive disorders one, since well.. the tests are for my crappy digesting self!

I know it sounds scary but you probably won't feel or remember a thing. Last year I had both done at the same time. My dr. said he does the colonoscopy first and then the endoscopy. The last thing I remember is him telling me he was going to sedate me and I was out like a light. I didn't feel a thing. Probably none of us could stand a tube down our throat unless we were sedated. Thank God, all my tests came out normal although he did tell me I have a hiatal hernia. I am still experiencing stomach discomfort off and on so I am assuming a lot of it is just nerves. Try not to worry - that just compounds our digestive problems!

I had the endoscopy done a couple weeks ago and I was awake through the whole thing. They gave me a little demerol and vallium(sp?)but I remember the whole thing. It wasn't too bad. The worst part was when they spray your throat with the numbing spray. That made me gag really bad. You will probably be asleep through the whole thing if your getting both done.

Both times I had an endoscopy went fine. I don't remember anything from the first and was able to watch everything on the second. The drugs really take care of the gag reflex. I didn't like the colonoscopy. I actually felt more awake when it was done and I has some pain when the air is pumped inside you. However, the painn was okay so I don't mean it was horrible pain but that I did feel some discomfort. In conclusion, I would do it all again if needed with no problem.

Well everything went well today. Didn't get my throat numbed... just got a couple things injected to my IV.. My endo was first wasn't really too aware of that but watched the tv on the colonoscopy the whole time.. not the most comfortable thing I've ever had done but wasn't the least bit painful. Getting the IV in the hand hurt more =P. Both results turned out alright. I only had 1 polyp found in the colonoscopy so they got rid of that bad boy. Still have to get a sono and the results for my blood work.
