Unhappy colon removal...scared

[SIZE=1]I am scared that I may be facing the removal of my colon. I want to know what its like, and the different types of surgery there are. i really do NOT want to have a bag attached to my body for the rest of my life. I am only 29 and I am newly married. Is there a way they can take your colon out and you dont have to have a bag, and you can still go poo poo? I have horrific microscopic colitis and I have been in pain for 5 months, every day, all day.
I have tried all the pills, pentasa, asocol, prenisone, pamine, bentyl, zoloft, advil, xanax, nexium, entocort, sulfasalizine, and now I am still in agony.
Doc thinks I may need surgery but hasnt explained it yet because he is pretty much really brief. I know, i need a new GI, and I am working on that. In the mean time. Can somebody explain to me what its like to have y our colon removed? What to expect. I dont care about the surgery part, just the result, and my quality of life.

Hi There!!

I know exactly what your going through. When I was 32, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. I had emergency surgery as I was hemmorging from my bowels. I couldn't even hold down a glass of water with vomiting. Anways to make a long story short, because I don't remember too much because I was in a lot of pain, when I went into the hospital I was put on Morphine and on T.P.N. I was in there for about 4 months at least. All I really remember was waking up from my surgery to find that I had an Illestomy bag on the outside of my body. Well needless to say by the next day when I wasn't out of it so much I was freaking. I guess I would put it this way it basically saved my life. Two years later I had another surgery, which maybe you should look into because I heard that some people can have it done right away instead of the Illestomy bag, but that depends on your overall health. Anways I had the pelvic pouch put in when I was 34. I had a few problems for the first year, but after that it was smooth sailing. Still you have to watch your diet. There is so much that you can't eat. Unfortunately I have a very bad back and have a rod in it since I was sixteen, so I have been on pain killers, which are NO GOOD for anybody that has Colitis, I think that all that has done is inflamed me. Now I am back on Entocort for the past month, but it doesn't seem like it's really helping. Anyways I really think you don't have much to worry about. If you live close to Canada, Mount Sinai is the BEST hospital to go to. They have a whole floor just for Colitis and Chron's patients. Well I hope I have been some help, the pouch on the outside it not as bad as you think. They come in various sizes also, and your also have to remember it's going to save your life!!

Take good care and good luck, my prayers re with you!!!

Margie
