Chronic Gastritis

This is my first time posting. I am just trying to help my mother (74) that has
chronic gastritis for the last one & half years. I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that there is NO CURE for Chronic Gastritis that I am aware of and nobody wants to admit it (in the Medical field). My mom is so sick& is suffering, I am afraid is is going to die due to malnutrtion and there is nothing I can do about it. I have read the message boards from 1999 and have read them and some of the people have the exact same symptoms and experiences and have not gotten better. Let me tell my story as it is reality. 6 years later it's the same old thing. Some people have a lot of different problems but as for gastritis or chronic gastritis there is nothing. Chronic means long term or forever. I am so so sad. She started to get acid ruflex after major hip surgery. ( I found out that a lot of people get stomach problems after surgery) This is because the antibiotics kill of all of your good bacteria so "probitotics & or bio-k yogurt" before and after are very important.
This was not done. Also my mom has always had a over acid stomach and has managed to take care of not eating i.e. tomatoes, lemon, vinegar etc...
She got mega doses of vitamin C which is citric acid and that was very very bad for her. She usually takes the coated kind "Ester-C". We did not know what she was getting. The the pain killers come in and your gut is shot.
So we went to the doctor and started with the usual things zantac, prevacid, nexium then stronger 4 weeks 8 weeks. Nothing worked! Then we tried a lot of those drugs that end in zpole you know them PPI's. Zip! none of them worked. All you get is side effects and the drugs make you worse. Next, me I went on the net and tried and bought and read everything on the subject. She was a human guenne pig. some of those products may work for some but not my mom. Aloe ver Molo cure DGL zinlori nothing, nothing, nothing works. Yes I am frustrated. We went to another top doctor....got tested and xrays. Great, all negatives and the doctors are just looking for something to treat with drugs. No ulcer, no bacteria, no yeast, no H-pilori , 2 stool tests ok.
Her major problem is that she cannot eat anything without getting sick. Everything she eats makes her sick. 6 months of his care trying to put weigt on or give her comfort did not work. She is 5'5' and approx 105 lbs. There is absolutely no magic food or anything that will not effect her only if she does not eat. She is starving all the time and sick. Her total daily calories is approx 400 and many times less. This is her menu, a slice brown bread, 1/2 cup milk, a 1/2 cup cream of wheat mixed with water and water. Sometimes 1/2 banana 4 grapes. She tried protein powder mixed with water or a little yogurt but yogurt is too sour. Sometimes cottage cheese but will she ever pay for it in the evening. Early eve all the foul smell gas starts over and over every day plus the sick feeling. So how can one get better if you cannot get food into you. Your stomach lining is inflamed and every time you put something in it burns even water. We tried antibotics & probiotics again and not change. A reg. dietician we contacted recommended IV (intervenious tube feed) for some nutrition. I thought this might be a good idea because when she does not eat and is starving her stomach gets some kind of rest and is feeling a little better. The second she eats again the attack begins. Isn't this awful.
Some people on the message boards have constipation /diarrria or vomitting.
She does not have constipation as she take magneseium and not vomiting.
The only way she can get IV is if a doctor refers or a GI doctor recomends it.
She did not see a GI as she does not want to get a endoscpy and they seem to have no treatment other that the zpole PPI drugs. Some people that have gastritis or chronic gastritis are managing because they are able to eat and constantly taking pills. My mother is on no pills as she cannot and they are not good for you for a long time. I am hoping that she can get into a hospital and get IV to heal out her stomach. Will this cure gastritis? I really do not know but I hopeandif this can help someone else that is so chronic, good luck. Thi is a long message and so sorry for all the people that are suffering with this sickness that no one realizes how serious it is and that I DO NOT SEE A CURE. If she can get better and I know of anything, I will adivse.

Re: Chronic Gastritis

Hi helpmother,

You need to get your mother to the gastro dr. She needs an upper endoscopy now. She is too thin. And she needs the IV for a few days. When your mom tried the stomach meds, did she wait an hour before eating or drinking or taking any other meds?

You have to be on the meds, like Nexium for 2 - 3 mo. for them to work to their full effect. And I also take Sucralfate. This med, coats your stomach. It has to be taken 1 hr. b/4 eating or 2-3 hrs. after eating. I usually take mine before I go to bed. My doctor also lets me take up to 4 Pepcid Complete and a Zantac in the afternoons or evenings, when I need them. This combination really helps me. Perhaps, you/she should try again! I would not hurt.

You need to get her the IV first. Hope yall go for help! Wannabe

Re: Chronic Gastritis

I am on Pantoloc (protonix) and it seems to finally be working although I still get the odd flare-up when I eat something really spicy or greasy. I have been taking PPI's for about 1 1/2 yrs. I have tried Pariet, Ranitidine, sucralfate. None of these helped. I am 5'5" and went from weighing 138 lbs to now weighing 108 lbs because I could not eat anything without feeling nauseous and having the feeling their was a brick in my stomach after a handful of food. The only things I could eat and drink were crackers, arrowroot cookies and gatorade.
The IV sounds like a good idea. I wish I could have done that in the first place. I think going through all these PPI's trying find one that worked only made my stomach "angrier".
Anyhow, good luck with your Grandmother and I hope she gets better and is able to eat again! I can certainly understand your frustration.

Hi Dee77,

If you are constipated from your meds, your doctor should prescribe Enulose for you. You take a spoonful every day and it helps keep you regular.

Hope you feel better soon. Wannabe

Re: Chronic Gastritis

Helpmother,

I think you need to become familar with foods that are not acid forming --- the alkaline type for your mother--- bread and all grains including cream of wheat and milk are all acidic type foods.

Veggies and fruits are alkaline forming.

Have you tried Mastic Gum for Gastritis--- it cured me in 2 weeks and that was the 2 week before 9/11.

I wish your Mother well---Harry

Re: Chronic Gastritis

Get her drinking juices. Make a green juice or buy green powder and mix it with distilled water. Use alkaline fruit juices and mix them half and half with water or club soda. I have had some bad experiences with my stomach and was unable to eat anything solid.

I would start with the green juice and herbal tea before adding in some of the diluted fruit juices.

For some protein, try softly cooked egg whites and seee if she can tolerate them.

Hope this helps.

Re: Chronic Gastritis

Thank you for all that have responded. I have not yet been able to get her Iv nuturtion. It is complicated here in Canada as it can only be done in hospital first I believe. Her doctor cannot authorize it but can refer to GI specialist and if he thinks she needs it they can place her on as last resort. But first a upper endoscopy must be done. I am trying mastic gum on her. She cannot drink fruit juices as too sweet &/or club soda. Green power & tea we have tried. In the beginning when we were on PPI's she was on them for 2/3 months with little effect but no improvement of the condition. Protien is not at all good for her egg white out of the question. A little whey powder with water sometimes. We know about acid/alkaline balance and have alway s eaten lots of fruits and veggies in the past. When you have a sick stomach it is too difficult to eat alkaline foods and yo will find that you take whatever seems to give you the least reaction. There still is a uncomfortable feeling. Also,
the volume of food is the killer. If she just eats over her usual tiny amount, say a 1/2 slice of bread in early aft. Wow, it is just awful.
So far I have made and appoint with a GI specialist for November.
