non-acidic GERD

Hi,
I am new to this board (26 yrs old) and was hoping to receive some advice. For the past 6 years, after I eat, it seems like my food does not digest in a normal amount of time. I feel like it just sits in my stomach. Then, right after I eat, I feel like i need to burp a little and when i do, my chewed food comes back up into my mouth. However, it is not acidic at all. it tastes exactly the same as when it first entered my mouth. I made an appt with a gastroendorologist and he set up a gastric emptying test for me. My question is, after reading about reflux and all the problems it can cause, do you think i have any danger or have damage to my esophagus because of this reflux (I am a worry wart and have read all about barretts disease, etc). I am not sure if I do , becasue I never have heartburn, pain, or any acid either. is non-acidic gerd harmful? I think it is odd that the gerd does not taste bitter, sour, or bad at all. I definitely want to talk more about this with my doctor, but thought someone on this board might provide some insight.I also was thinking that maybe my LES sphincter is not allowing food to enter my stomach right away. is that possible? any help is appreciated!

Re: non-acidic GERD

When food leaves your stomach too slow, it is called Gastroparesis. There are diets that help correct this problem.

You can find out many detailed sites by going to the top of this page -- and entering it on Google and do a search on the WEB. Just type in-- gastroparesis and search.

I wish you well~~~Harry

Re: non-acidic GERD

Thank you for the advice. My doctor suspects that I do have gastroparesis and that is why he is having me take a gastric emptying test on Monday. Hopefully he will find what he needs to know from this test. I had a mobility test done about 6 years ago when I was in college, hoever, everything looked normal. All of my symptoms do point to gastroparesis. Should I also be worried about any damage taht the non-acid reflux has caused on my esophagus. Like I said earlier, the food that comes back up is not acidic at all. in fact, it is just like it is when I ingest it into my mouth. when it comes back up, it is just chewed. taht is the only difference. i have no heartburn pain or any burning. so if i don't seem to have those symptoms and the food that comes up is non acidic at all, i am thinking that my esophagus is not damaged. should i ask my doctor about this also?

Re: non-acidic GERD

I don't think your esophagus is damaged because it is made to stand some acid but not the really low pH level of the stomach acid.
But, it may be a good idea whenever you have your next endoscopy exam ask the Doc to make sure he checks the esophagus for damage. As you may know your throat as well as esophagus has very little feeling sensors --- so any meaningful damage is not felt by soreness!!
