Doctor said an ulcer or gastritus??

I went to the hospital for minor stomach pains on sunday and they made me drink some white stuff that numbed my tongue and throat and made me feel a little better then they did blood work and said as far as my organs looked i was very healthy. I have pain in my upper right and left abdominal area and sometimes its just from side to side and every once in awhile it is in my back but not much. Ive been on alot of pain meds since 2002 because of my knee and in october was on alot of IBprofen because of a back injury.

Im 22 and they said that they wouldnt worry about cancer at all since all the blood work came out fine and that they think i have an ulcer or gastritus. They told me to take 2 zantac a day for the ulcer, the first couple of days it helped but today my ive had pain off and on most of the day. It is not a horrible pain just discomforting. My question is does anyone else have this problem like mine and was it really an ulcer, i have an appt. on tuesday to see a doctor about it just to make sure it is an ulcer.

What meds did you get on and how long did it take to get rid of the problem. It is bad being home for winter break and not wanting to go out with my friends cause i cant drink and i dont eat that much because they told me to eat light. I guess im just looking for any insight into an ulcer that someone can give me and some comfort from people to let me know that im not dieing. THanks

Well, for gastritis I was told to eat no dairy, eat mostly things like mashed potatoes, noodles, white rice and chicken and fish. Not fried. There are ulcers that you can get from pain meds and there is the h. pylori bacteria that causes ulcers. Both really should be checked out with an endoscopy where they scope your stomach. That really is the only way to tell for sure what is going on. It is painless, you are in la-la land. I just had my 5th but do not have results yet from biopsies. No, you probably don't have stomach cancer. Highly unlikely. I would try the diet as I mentioned and see if it helps. The pills will help with acid but it takes a while for the stomach to heal. As far as the "your organs look fine" What did they base this on. Did you have a CT scan? Blood work can not tell how your stomach is unless you have h. pylori bacteria and then it takes a special test. You might also check out gall bladder. See a specialist.

Re: Doctor said an ulcer or gastritus??

My name is Bob and I am almost 69 years old. Back in 1993-1994, I was diagnosed with a Duodenal Ulcer. I was in constant pain, and kept eating all the time and not knowing what was good for me. I was put on some medications which never worked.
My son, who is now a 4th year medical student, was a Physician Assistant for about 9 years. In December 1994, he prescribed for me the following: Prilosec 20mg and Tetracycline 500mg for 7 days. This combination finally cured my Duodenal Ulcer, and it never returned. Please talk to you doctor about this. Best regards.

Well, you can get ulcers from taking certain meds or you can have ulcers from the h.pylori bacteria. I think if they are not the h.pylori then the regular routine is to stop taking the offending medication such as Advil, Aspirin, etc and take something like Nexium which will cut down on acid and help with healing. If you test positive for h. pylori then the standard treatement is Biaxin and Amoxicillan(double doses) for 2 weeks and also Prevacid. Then after about a month you are tested again to see if it is gone. There may be some other causes of ulcers but these are the two more prevalent. Look up stomach ulcers on google and you will find all the info you need. Gastritis can take a long time to heal with a pretty bland diet. Chances are if you have been on pain meds you do have an ulcer of the first kind. Try taking Prilosec you can buy in the drug store. It is not unusual to have many days in a row that you feel OK and then get hit really hard and you don't know why. It is usually something that has created too much stomach acid or too acidic to begin with.
