Hello. After many tests to figure out why my upper stomach is burning off and on - my gastro do is suggesting that I go to a specialist 2 hours away to test for Spinchter of Oddi? My stomach issues have been going on for almost 10 months now. Started about 6 months after I had my gallbladder removed. There are two problems I'm battling with , not sure if they are realted or not. I get this burning, gnawing sensation in my upper stomach almost daily. Not a buckle over pain, but just an annoying warm sensation in my upper stomach. Seems to stay in the areas where m incision scars are from the fallbaldder removal. Can't pinpoint it on anything I eat, etc. Also, every once in a while I get these episode of pressure in upper stomach where the rib cage meets. It then radiates to the middle of my back and gives me this terrible squeezing sensation between the shoulder blades. This can last from 5 mintues to an hour at a time. It seems to be relieved if I bend over into a certain position and is accompnied by burping and sometimes I can feel something I ate trying to come back up (sounds gross I know). If I take something like Maalox or Gaviscon it clears it up. All of my tests came back normal that my gastro doc ordered. I've had TON to figure this out. Abdomen x ray, blood test for H pylori, blood test to check the liver and pancrease (look ok), colonoscopy (doc says slight IBS), barium swallow/esopogram, abdomen cat scan (found lesions on the liver), MRI to follow up with the liver lesions - turned out to be hemangiomas on the liver - doc says a non issue and shouldn't be the cause of the burning in the stomach. I've even gone to a allergist and an earn nose and throat doc beacuse I was having alot of problems with mucous and doc thoguht this could be related to the stomach problems. All looked ok at these two appointments as well. My gastro doc said the next resort is to test for Spinchter of Oddi Dysfunction. What exactly is this? Is it serious. I heard you can get pancrease problems after having the test done? Is that true? What are the symptoms of Spinchter of Oddi? OR can I just be cursed with a bad case of reflux that acts up now and then? Thanks for listening.
VAN71 - thank you for the link. I will check it out. Yes I did have gallstones, but didn't really realize it. I thought I had food poisioning or the stomach flu one night. I just kept vomitting. The next day, I was queezy (it was thanksgiving), but again thinking I had the flu bug or some type of food poisining the night before, I felt good enough to get out for our family Thanksgiving gathering. Even managed to eat a little dinner. On the way home from dinner, we had to stop 5 times on the way home so I could vomit. Here we go again/ It was horrible. Once I got home, I was getting a pain in my upper stomach that was brutal, thought it was a muscle from all the vomitting. At that point I was vomitting nothing but bile, not sure where anything was coming from. Then (not to be gross) but it turned to green liquid and burned by throat coming up. Called the ER, said to come in, they took ultrasound and blood tests> Found that there were gallstones and an inflamed gallbladder, my white blood count was high which was a sign of infection somewhere - they took me to surgery within 5 hours after I was preped. Surgery was a breeze, recovery wasn't bad, you just don't realize how much you rely on your stomach muscles. But honestly, I've had nothing but probelms with loose bowel movements, and a burning stomach ever since then. Why are you having yours remvoed? Do you have gallstones? What were/are your symptoms? Makes me wonder. I understand you can still get gallstones even after the gallbladder is gone. Could be what I'm going through with the pressure in the upper stomach that radiates to the back.
Your welcome. After you read it, does it sound like what you are going through? It can be caused by gallstones. Did you just have surgery this past Nov? I never heard you could get gallstones with no gallbladder, but I have heard they can miss them if not in the gallbladder when removed (sometimes they can get into bile ducts). Or do you think your problems are a result of the surgery?
I am having mine removed because of the pain. I do not have gallstones and it looks fine on ultrasound and catscan. The hida scan showed it functioning at only 30%, and the drs cannot find anything else after 3 months of tests so think that is what my problem is. I have pain on the right and left sides under my ribcage (anywhere from an ache to a squeezing to shooting pains) which is definately worse after eating anything. I also have pain in my mid back which can radiate up towards my shoulders.
You didn't mention whether you had an upper endoscopy or not. This can diagnose ulcers. The blood test for h. pylori is not sufficient. They need to take a biopsy of your stomach during the endoscopy. I went through all the testing and the endoscopy finally found the problem.
Gingertea - I had an endoscopy about 1 year ago to check out my acid reflux problem ( I also had one 2 years prior to that). At that time everything looked good at that time I was on Nexium). The burning pain did not start until about 3-4 months after my last endoscopy. When I asked about having another endoscopy done to try to diagnose this problem, they said it hasn't even been a year since we did the last one (at that time it was about 6 months) and the results of the last one were fine, so they didn't see any sense in doing another one at that time. Well, now it's been a year. Wonder if I should demand to have another one done. They can't seem to find anything with all of the other stomach tests they've given me. Not sure why they wouldn't do one right away? Are there risks invovled in doing to many? Is it wrong to request a test like this again?
