stomach flu

my granddaughter, age 4, and i have had the stomach flu. we had to take her to the hospital for an IV because she was dehydrated from vomiting. she seems better now, but it has hit me hard with diarrhea. Is anyone else dealing with this? How long does it last? any ideas on stoppingthe diarrhea?

Re: stomach flu

seagoddess,

To stop diarrhea, you must remove any food stuffs that your intestines can expell. This means no solid foods for 8-12 hours, as well as any fluids with "solids" disolved in them. Fluids are important, of course, as diarrhea quickly leads to dehydration. So I drink carbonated sodas with sugar (the "bubbles" settle my stomach and the sugar gives me calories when I can't eat anything else). Sugar in plain water is also ok. No milk, as milk has solids dissolved in the fluid. No fruit juices for the same reason. Even though you can't see the solids, you body will know, and continue trying to get rid of it in the fastest (and most unpleasant!) way possible.

I know we are supposed to be thinking of healthy foods to improve our bodies. But when the body won't keep anything in, it's more important to give it a rest so it can heal.

After drinking only fluids for 8-12 hours, you can try eating a small quantity of simple starches, such as white rice with a little salt or broth. If your body is ok with that, then you can start adding joghurt to replenish your intestinal "bugs", and small quantities of other foods.

Hope you get well soon!
