Colonoscopy tomorrow...possible IBD...questions!

I posted on here a couple of weeks ago about problems that I had been having after gallbladder surgery. I had been experiencing fatigue, abdominal pain and cramping, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), persistent low-grade fever, and awful nausea, and one new symptom, strange, painful bruise-like spots that all of a sudden appeared on my shins.

I went to see my GI doctor Thursday and he has me scheduled for a colonoscopy tomorrow morning. At first the nurse scheduled it for June 23, and the doctor came back in and said "no it needs to be done asap", so tomorrow is the day. He didn't tell me for sure what he was looking for, but I have a feeling he is looking for inflammatory bowel disease. I have done some reading and my symptoms seem to fit crohn's disease to a T. For someone that may have crohn's or ulcerative colitis, do my symptoms seem to fit?

My doc now has me on protonix, librax, welchol for the diarrhea, and tigan for the nausea. None of them have seemed to help much at all. I have had an upper GI endoscopy, so I am not too nervous about the procedure itself, it's just drinking the gallon of NuLytely that I am a bit worried about.

I just hope my GI will find something so I will have a diagnosis. I've been feeling this way for 3 months and I would just like to feel half-way normal again. I am only 20...to young to be feeling this cruddy.

I'd appreciate any insight anyone can give me!

Megan

Re: Colonoscopy tomorrow...possible IBD...questions!

Hi MFord,

I hope you are feeling better with all the meds your dr. gave you. I know that stomach problems can really make you feel bad. At least you are in the hands of a gastro. dr., and a colonoscopy is one of the best tests for the digestive system.

I have had several. And you are correct that the drinking and going thru of the golightly is about the worst part! But, when you are thru - you are thru! :>

Anyway, just make sure that they knock you out completely and bring someone with you so they can talk to the dr. You may still be groggy. The procedure is not painful and you can rest the rest of the day. The dr. should be able to see and take pics of lots of stuff in your bowels. My Gastro gave me about 3 of the pics. Of course, that means that at least 3 things were wrong with me!!! But, these problems can usually be fixed with meds., of while he/she is in there, they can cut out polyps!!! Which could be cancer in the future (if not cut out).

Good luck to you. And try not to worry.

Take care.

Wannabe

Re: Colonoscopy tomorrow...possible IBD...questions!

Thanks for the reply, Wannabe.

I have drunk a bottle of Mag-Citrate, and have downed two glasses of the NuLytely. Extremely nauseous, but no results yet...lol. I have never done the bowel prep before, but I am sure I am in for an "active" evening...if you know what I mean.

I had the upper GI done when I spent my week in the hospital before they did the gallbladder surgery, and I was out completely for it. My GI said that normally for endoscopies, they do conscious sedation; but I have many drug allergies, so my doc wanted anesthesiology to knock me out completely, using general anesthesia. So thats what they are going to do tomorrow. I don't care what anyone does to me, as long as I am asleep.

For anyone here with IBD, do my symptoms seem to correlate with those of crohn's and uc?
