Question Upper GI Endoscopy.

Hello to all,
Haven't been here for a while. (other problems.)
Would like to ask what a endoscopy is like as I am down to have one on 16th September? My barium enama xray and abdomen ultrasound were both clear so can I assume that my gallbladder is ok? I'me a little anxious
as I am booked to be admitted for bowel resection 2 days after the endoscopy. I was rather hoping that they would have sorted this nausea/raw upper abdomin pain before my op. The reason being I don't want pain and nausea while I am in for the big op. What does a endoscopy show?
I am posting this under my wifes user name and password because for some reason mine is suddenly not being recognised!!
Any feed back please?
Regards, Haydon.

Hi

I had the Upper Endoscopy last month. What they did to me was spray this numbing spray(kind of unc0mfortable for me) and then they semi-sedate. Then they put this long tube in with a video camera attached to it down your throat and it visually shows your esophogas and stomach and its lining. It's a fairly quick procedure.

My results were normal... but they said I have delayed reflux, which means I have Gerd. So, basically now I'm researching for ways to treat it naturally. My doc gave me some antaacids but I'm still reluctant to take them since they do destroy the good bacteria in the stomach.

There's nothing to worry about. I was scared and nervous at first but felt much better after it was all over and done with.

I also had this procedure done a few years ago. I was so anxious over it and it turned out not to be so bad!

I also had the spray to numb my throat. They also gave me Valium and Demorral (sp?). I think they did the trick. I was out like a light and didn't wake up until the last 30 seconds when the tube was coming out. But I was still so out of it I didn't care!

For the rest of the day I was tired/groggy and my throat and esophagus felt dry. I was also a little hoarce. It really wasn't bad - heck, I have had worse experiences at the dentist!

Best of luck!

BTW - I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux (which coincidentally only comes on with stress - makes me wonder!)

Hi. I also had an upper gi last year. I'm 26 yr. old and for the longest, I have been having all sorts of stomach problems (lots of indigestion, heartburn, and upset stomach, gas). I was petrified to have it because I didn't want to be awake while they put a tube down my throat. They gave me Diprovan and I woke up 30 minutes after it was done. It wasn't bad at all. I ate right after. The test just proved that I had extreme gastritis. gretchen

Hi, there. I've had 6 endos done in the last 7 years, so I can tell you - it's no big deal. Along with numbing spray for the gag reflex, you might get demarol (to sedate you) and versad (causes amnesia for the procedure) and you won't remember a thing. Then you "wake up" and go home. You might feel groggy for the day, but I was able to eat normally about 30 minutes later. My throat is usually sore for the day from the scope and spray. It will show if your esophagus and/or stomach is inflamed, and biopsies can be taken to determine other digestive diagnoses.

Good luck - it's a breeze!
