Lightbulb Low Stomach Acid - must read!

Hello everyone,

I am an infrequent poster that just had to post to tell you all what I have found out in the last 6 days. I have suffered from indigestion and digestive problems for about 2 years now. I've tried everything from fibre supplementation, strict diet changes, nutritional supplements, antacids, and a few other OTC medications. Finally after seeing my second Naturopathic doctor she said she thinks everyone has been giving me the wrong diagnosis. I do not have IBS, and I do not have GERD. I likely have LOW stomach acid - not HIGH stomach acid. It is called Hypochlorydria and can cause a wide range of symptoms - most of which I have, but I have never told any medical professionals about them because I never made the connection. (ie, peeling nails, eczema, undigested food in my stool, adult acne, etc.) The obvious symptoms though were persistant constipation even when trying mild laxatives, and persistent indigestion even after trying all natural and medical remedies. (I was beginning to think I was crazy.)

To confirm her diagnosis she started me taking Betaine Hydrochloride. HCl. Yep - that's actually Hydrochloric acid, but it comes in a capsule so it isn't harsh at all. The end result? I feel incredible. Completely! It is a GODSEND!!! No more huge, bloated stomach, no more unexplained gas pains, no more constipation, and no more food sitting in my stomach for hours on end. I feel so well I absolutely feel compelled to tell everyone to see their medical doctor, or a naturopathic doctor to see if LOW acid might be causing thier problems. Please take this seriously. Do some research first, you MUST take HCl under the guidance of a healthcare practitioner so PLEASE do not just go out and start taking it on your own.

Anyway - that's my story. Good luck to you all!

pb

I have SEVERE bloating and constipation. I thought low stomach acid might be my problem. I have tried everything. My doctor doesn't have a clue. Where do you get betaine hydrochloride. Do you have to have a prescription? Thanks for your help. I am desperate.

Hi pb25

Do you still feel okay with your current treatment of taking HCl.

My problem is that i get so much GAS that every 10 minutes i have to belch it out.

I do have other problems as well but i suppose GAS is my major problem.

Please inform us more of how your treatment is going.

Cheers,
Axxi

To PB25:
did your doc say there was any connection to low stomach acid and weight gain? I've been on Prilosec and Nexium for the past 10 years. It seems that I don't eat much, feel bloated, and can't lose any weight no matter what I eliminate. Thought maybe that in taking the Prilosec and Nexium that I don't have enough stomach acid to digest my food and it just ends up as weight gain. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
jitterbug

Re: Low Stomach Acid - must read!

I sometimes had ' Cold ' feeling / sensation ( or preferring Warmth ) in my abdomen sleeping at night . Wonder if it's low acid ? I'm 46 yrs old male and at this age Hypochlorhydria is unlikely I think .
Also when I curl up and lying on the sides , it's just seem to be more comfortable then lying on my back straight .
