I might have an endoscopy and I was wondering what it is like. I am terrified of getting one. I don't know how anyone actually swallows the camera without gagging and throwing up. Is it really as bad as it sounds?
It's not as bad as it sounds. I had it done with very little sedation. I was awake for the whole thing. Most people are asleep, or don't remember anything for it. The worst part is when they spray your throat with the numbing spray. It tastes horrible. Other than that everything else is a breeze!
If you are awake for it the scope in your stomach will just feel like that nervous "butterflies" feeling. Doesn't hurt at all.
An endoscopy goes through the mouth and into the stomach and sometimes the first part of the small intestine. A gastroscopy is basically the same as an endoscopy but I am not sure whether it goes as far as the small intestine. A COLONOSCOPY goes in the other end. I have had the endoscopy done and both my parents have had the colonoscopy because of a history of colon cancer.
yep.. an endoscopy goes down through the esophagus and into the stomach. You don't have to swallow it.. they give you a sedative and numb your throat and guide the camera/scope down your throat. You don't feel a thing. Your throat is a little tender afterwards, but after a day or so you won't know you even had it! I had one a few years ago.

You won't throw up. Don't worry. I thought the same thing because my main symptom is nausea. I think the light sedation actually helped with that at the time. Once it wore off though, that was a different story
Good Luck and don't worry about it. Once it's over you'll be kicking yourself for worrying so much.
My 2 yr old daughter just had one yesterday. It only takes about 1/2 hr and that first 15 min was to get her asleep She had general anesthesia (they do that with young kids). But everything went smoothly. The only bad part is waiting that week for the results if they take biopsies. The reason she had it done is because she tested + for Celiac disease.
But real quick procedure. It is pretty routine they schedule a bunch in a day.
I hope all turns out well for you.
I had a barium swallow done. It's horrible tasting and the gas you have afterwards is a pain--literally. They detect things like ulcers, tumors, hiatal hernias, swallowing problems, basically most things wrong with your esophagus and stomach. The endoscopy is much better then the barium swallow because it looks directly in your esophagus and stomach where the barium swallow only "highlights" the areas. I was diagnosed with acid reflux through the endoscopy but not the barium swallow.
I had an endoscopy back in December. It is uncomfortable, but not horrible. They gave me a slight sedative for the pain, but I was awake. Try not to think too much of the thing going down your throat and, most importantly, always concentrate on breathing through your nose. It shouldn't take long.
I had one done this morning and it was a breeze, only problem now is a headache from the anesthia, I was given versed and don't remember a thing!!
No sore throat, nothing, do have an ulcer though.
Ask your dr about versed though.
