Unhappy Terrible pain in right side of back!

I wonder if anyone can help me. Last night I experienced something I never hope to experience again. A short while after dinner (I had chicken and some kind of homemade mac and cheese, followed later by cherry pie), an intense sort of pain developed in my back, and it got so bad I contemplated going to the hospital. However, I have no insurance and was quite afraid, so I didn't go. I was eventually able to fall asleep and by morning the pain was gone, but I still felt crappy and miserable. Today I've had to call out of work (which they are none too pleased about, but let's not count on bosses to be understanding) because I still feel so malaised, and the pain returns here and there, though much more mildly. I have felt the pain on my left side, too, but it seems to concentrate on the right side, and somewhere in the back area. I also had several bowel movements that seemed normal enough, not diarrhea or anything. It's just that I seemed to go more then usual. I also have a slight burning in my abdomen.

I've written to these boards before and I have health problems still undiagnosed, but this new sort of pain scared me. Funny thing is, this pain happened before but it was in the front area, directly by the bellybutton. I have done research aplenty, and suspect gallbladder problems, but I've not had the sort of intensity of pain that most people have. The pain was bad, but not SEVERE. I was able to fall asleep eventually, after much tossing and turning to try and get comfortable (it was worse lying down). It's now about 5:40 pm and it's gotten too late to see a doctor, plus I have to work tomorrow. ::sigh:: I am really tired of dealing with these problems after nearly 4 years. Does anyone have the slightest inclination of what can cause such dramatic changes in health? Earlier that day, I had felt rather good for once, up until after dinnertime. I appreciate anyone's responses, thank you!

I would still consider having your gallbladder check and possibly kidney too. Gallbladder pain doesn't have to be SEVERE. It can be pretty rough depending on the size of the stone and other factors. I personally have never had gallbladder problems but I know people that have. One firend of mine did have severe pain and his eyes turned yellow. He had his gallbladder removed shortly after. Another friend of mine had pain similar to yours and his doctor told him that it was possible that he passed a small stone. His pain left after about two days but the first night was his wost. He had to lay down and he was seating heavily. The next day the pain wasn't as bad but he still felt some discomfort and was tired.

I mentioned kidney too. Back flank pain can be sign of kidney infection. However usually there are other symptoms like hurting too pee, blood in urine, etc. It can be so hard to diagnose something just by pain alone. Believe me because I have been going through problems the last two months with some diagnosis but i am still having problems so I am still looking for answers.

Yes, I agree, go to the doctor and get your kidneys checked out.

Did you happen to have any heartburn along with the pain in the right side of your back?

suzyshop1-

I get abdominal burning, but rarely heartburn. And no I did not have heartburn during that pain attack.

To the others who mentioned kidney infection...I did research on that and yeah it states usually you'd have intense burning, blood in the urine, and so forth, but also said the pain was actually lower back area. This was quite high up in the back! (But whose to say, right?) I know that it could be so many things. I'm going to see if Social Security offices can get me Medicaid, I hear you can get it on a certain income level. I know I need to see a doctor! Thankfully that pain is gone, I still have my other problems but I think careful eating can avoid or reduce the chances of another attack. I know that things like fatty foods, spicy foods, or even chocolate can aggravate gallbladder problems, so I'm getting back to a gluten/egg/diary free diet and watching my sweets.

Thanks to all for their responses!
