nexium anyone? also, anyone hurt their stomach with advil?

Does anyone take nexium? If so, how does it work for you? I have been taking prilosec now for two weeks with no results. It is very frustrating. I'm not sure what is going on with me, but I believe I've hurt my stomach from taking too much advil on an empty stomach for many years. I have endometriosis, so I take it for cramps that I have throughout the month. Anyway, any advice on either taking nexium or too much advil would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone else has had my problem with the advil, what were your symptoms?

There is some good information on PPI's on the Acid Reflux board. Have you tried looking there yet?

i have acid reflux and advil is def out of the question. tylenol extra strength is better for ppl with acid reflux even though it doesnt work as good as advil for some things. when i take advil my stomach gets bloated and aggravates the reflux

Re: nexium anyone? also, anyone hurt their stomach with advil?

Hey Carisa,

Like you, I also have endometriosis, and take alot of advil for the pain. I sometimes take up to 25-30 a day on a bad day. I was diagnosed with acid reflux a couple of months ago after I had been experiencing alot of epigastric pain. I told my GI about my over-usage of advil and other NSAID's, and he really suspected that I had an ulcer caused by them. But thank goodness I didn't. At first, I tried OTC meds like Prilosec and they didn't do much to help. My GI then put me on Protonix, which has seemed to help with the pain and reflux.

It does help me to take Advil with some food, because like you, I have stomach pain when I take them on an empty stomach. I get violently ill with nausea and stomach pain when I take advil on an empty stomach.

No, I haven't checked out the acid reflux board yet. I will have to do that. I'm just not sure if that is what I have yet. I am going to the dr.s tomorrow. I do believe that the overuse of advil has something to do with my constant stomach ache. I have taken up to about 25 a day, without it, I would be in so much pain. What is protonix? I will have to ask my doc about that. Thanks for all the replys.

Re: nexium anyone? also, anyone hurt their stomach with advil?

Carisa,

Protonix is a proton-pump inhibitor that works by blocking acid production in the stomach. It is in the same classification of drugs as Nexium. Have you tried any meds to control your endometriosis pain? I am taking Lupron (just had my second shot) and it seems to have helped some with my pain, but not as much as I would like it to. Taking as much advil as we do is really dangerous, not to mention really bad for your GI tract, but when you are in agony with pain, you have to take something!

Good luck at the doc tomorrow and keep us posted!

Re: nexium anyone? also, anyone hurt their stomach with advil?

I took 800mg of pure ibuprofen (a NSAID) 3x a day starting this time last year (severe butt problems), went to maybe 2x/day after some 2 mos then 1x/day another 2 mos after that. In total 800 mg+/day for 7 mos until IT HIT.

By Feb suddenly all hell broke loose. I was burping (if that's what it is!) every 5 sec or so, I knew something was wrong.

Doc's all assumed and are still assuming (general, GE, and yesterday an ENT because of my throat symptoms with it) I have "acid-reflux disease" (Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, GERD). I was on 1 Nexium/day for 4 mos, during which my stomach began to feel almost always nauseous (basically right after my endoscopy, which showed mild gastritis). The other month I was allowed to go to 2 Nexium/day (both for the throat version of this and to try to help my gastritis). I'm still suffering quite a bit.

I am praying the NSAID assault didn't lead to genuine reflux disease, which looks hopeless (and feels so for me, who's still suffering about daily). Usually 1 only reads about NSAIDs leading to gastritis and ulcers, not "ruining the sphincter" (i.e., true GERD). I'm honestly hoping partly that it's just a symptom of gastritis. But then, I don't know what to wish anymore! Guess we shouldn't wish for anything else!

But I am convinced that whatever it is, my NSAID use was the instigator. I could kick myself forever for relying so heavily on them! So yes, I can believe you've hurt yourself with Advil. I just hope you can rectify it!

Re: nexium anyone? also, anyone hurt their stomach with advil?

You're right, you don't really think about the damage that you can do to yourself with nsaids. I really need it though. I am having the worst cramps ever right now because I went to the dr. today and she said I could no longer take things like advil for quite awhile. So she gave me a prescription pain killer which has so far done nothing. I feel like I'm dying Anyway, she also gave me prevacid for my ulcer. She told me that she thinks I may have given myself one from all of the advil. She said if it doesn't feel better within about a week or so than I will have to go to a specialist to have further investigation. I'm just praying the prevacid takes care of it. She wants me to be on it for about two months to get rid of my ulcer. What a pain......literally.
