Either way, I'm trying to go off Nexium.....I have had a dry cough since December and I'm wondering if it is the Nexium. Yesterday was my first full day without it, and on Mg, it wasn't an overly fun day but I'll keep trying. I also cut coffee out this morning..... headache...... lol
Kimianne makes a good point, newhere. why don't you tell your doctor that the next time you see him.

Yeah that is a good point actually. I think he mentioned something about before PPI's were introduced they used Al/Mg/Ca antacids and that may be why.

But I have had a burning stomach almost every evening after dinner since going off Nexium. I'm a little worried that I may have to be on ppi's for life.

Newhere, are you watching what you eat? Try taking a digestive enzyme to help your food digst better. You might also try eating smaller meals more frequently instead of eating big or heavy meals.

Re: GERD Sufferers..I feel good...let me tell you why...

Yeah, I'm super careful about what I eat. Always small light meals, I never eat till I'm full. I just started taking digestive enzymes on Thursday, hopefully they will help. Yesterday I ate vegetables at lunch and they really hurt my stomach, well later on.....the biggest thing that I notice while not on ppi's is just an excess of stomach acid production, it just feels like it's on fire sometimes!

Maybe I should be taking a different kind of Mg?

Magnesium is a mineral used for spasms and cramping and does not cause your stomach to burn.

It sounds like you have inflammation(gastritis) or an ulcer. Have you been tested for H.pylori bacteria infection. It causes about 85% of stomach ulcers.

Question Re: GERD Sufferers..I feel good...let me tell you why...

Harry, would magnesium tablets help in acid production caused by bile reflux gastritis? I've tried all the PPI's but they don't seem to work.

I suggest a magnesium product called Naturally Calm. It seems very good to me.

Re: GERD Sufferers..I feel good...let me tell you why...

I was tested for H.Pylori back when I had all of my testing done.....my symptoms were the same then and the test was negative. The burning is not the result of the Mg, it is like that even when I'm not on it.

Back on 20mg Nexium, +Mg, +digestive enzymes and everything is good at the moment. I'm seeing a specialist and will probably do some more testing then and I will ask him about going off the Nexium. I'm just scared of doing damage in the meantime if I go off of it!

Re: GERD Sufferers..I feel good...let me tell you why...

Hi, I have been having alot of problems with my IBS and such. I am on Zelnorm that helps alot. I recently had a colonoscopy and he found a polyp but surely that hasn't been all my problem I wouldn't think. I haven't talked to him yet about that. June 3rd I go back. Anyway, I have had alot heart burn and indigestion. I can't take Calcium suppliments because of kidney stones. I am a major producer.
I am check on the magnesium and if it wouldn't have anything to affect my kidney stone production then I may try it. Kidney stones can be made up of so much. I believe Magnesium too I think I read. Thank you for the information. Polly

I just found this information so I am going to look into this more:
The common calcium oxalate stone can form in an acidic urine whether one takes vitamin C or not. However, if a person gets adequate quantities of B-complex vitamins and magnesium, this type of stone does not form. Any common B-complex supplement twice daily, plus about 400 milligrams of magnesium, is usually adequate.

Re: GERD Sufferers..I feel good...let me tell you why...

Hi All:

Just a quick update on myself.

Started the Mag on 05/11/04 at lunch time. Next two days had to take Tums sometimes and felt some heartburn but almost normal again. Well since the 13th I have not had to do anything else but the Mag. and it is really working!

Keep positive!

Thanks Harry and Bluepumkin what a difference you have made in my life!

Re: GERD Sufferers..I feel good...let me tell you why...

Just wanted to check in about my results after trying this for over 30 days.
I have both indigestion problems during the day as well as acid reflux problems at night. My guess is these are two different issues. The daytime indigestion was solved by using the calcium/mag supplement. The nightime acid reflux was not solved by using the calcium/mag so I had to go back on the nexium which does solve both problems. I think the supplement does help some with both problems but the major problem I have is the night time acid which comes up and is damaging my esophogus. I am continuing with the supplement and plan another try at a later date to stop taking the nexium. I would recomend people give this a try. Not much to lose as it is a very inexpensive supplement and I believe has other positive effects.

Re: GERD Sufferers..I feel good...let me tell you why...

I'm glad you posted. I was wondering if this would help me. I,too, suffer from relfux at night. This is, relatively, new to me. As, it has just come on within the past month. I don't suffer from much indigestion.
