Post GERD vs Post Nasl Drip

How can one tell the difference between Post Nasal Drip and GERD? I wake up with a nasty taste and bad breath. Sometimes a sore throat and slight queasy stomach. I have evidence of PND, but these symptoms could be both disorders. GI doctor says it could be PND, but I'm not sure. Have been taking Prevacid for a couple years anyway for an acidic like stomach. I asked the dr for a change in medicine. Anyone with GERD have this foul taste thing?

Yes, to the foul taste thing. Ugh. The taste is hard to describe...but probably, bitter and salty..constantly...with increased salivation. Feels like my salivary glands are over active. It is not so bad in the am, but salivation does slow down while sleeping. I think the condition is called "waterbrash." Chewing gum helps me. Does this sound like your problem? What other symptoms do you have?

Did you mean the foul taste was from GERD or Post nasal drip? No chest pain or burning, just yucky taste, breath, and sometimes a slight sore throat.
Also my tongue has a white type coating. Maybe this is what smells????

Yes, I had similar problems. After seeing a variety of different specialists, I was diagnosed by an ENT as having laryngopharangeal reflux which means that the acid has reached my throat and caused irritation. I didn't have burning but I had what seemed like post-nasal drip, irritated throat, bad taste, white coating on tongue. I ended up having swallowing problems and haven't been eating much for over 3 months. I would suggest you make an appointment with an ENT so they can have a good look down your throat with a small tube that is inserted through your nose -- not painful at all and it only takes seconds.

Yes, I have this too. I have been on medication for over a year for GERD, but still have this awful taste, white tongue & back pain. What did you find out from ENT doctor? Was it PND? Halley

Interesting. I've had post-nasal drip for years, never
had a taste associated with it...BUT...I've used
Entex (or a generic) to help with congestion. I had
a sore throat for 4 months, the ENT did the down the
throat test, which reassured me there was no tumor,
etc. At that time we decided there were several things
going on, one of them acid reflux, which was adding
to the sore throat.

Later, my primary's nurse practitioner made a comment
to the effect that Entex can "promote" or "magnify"
acid reflux! The primary hadn't know it. I found out
myself that when taking Entex for the congestion of
post-nasal drip, I have to take Protonix every day.

Once I stopped the Entex, I can sometimes take Protonix every other day, or even less often. The taste in my
mouth, which started at the same time as GERD, is metallic. There are other things that cause a
metallic taste, but I'm sure about the time that it
began.

Oh My Gosh! I have this metallic taste that I can NOT get rid of! Could this be a cause of GERD? Would Prilosec help? Are you saying that you all have a metallically taste too?

Re: GERD vs Post Nasl Drip

My feeling is less of a bad taste and more of a pressure like feeling in my throat and increased salivation. It feels like I could constantly gag. When I'm having a bad day I have to constantly chew a strong mint gum or else I feel like I'm going to vomit. I don't know if this is GERD that I have or what but it's driving me crazy since I'm emetophobic (afraid of vomiting)! I'm seeing a few new docs soon so hopfully they can help diagnose. If you're having a bad time I would suggest the mint gum because it takes some of the grossness away and my doctor told me that it's good for acid reflux anyway!
