Question Chronic Gastritis- Will I ever be able to have a few drinks again?

I am 22. I have had gastritis symptoms for years but only got diagnosed with chronic gastritis after I changed doctors and had an endoscopy. Before the endoscopy I was put on heaps of drugs to treat h pylori- which the doctor did not confirm with any tests whatsoever, had endo and i never even had h pylori.

Finally went to a decent doc after being put on course after course of h pylori eradicating drugs for at least 8 months and was diagnosed with chronic gastritis and put on strict diet.
I also have celiac disease(can't eat wheat or gluten). So there isn't much I am allowed to eat which is annoying.

I was put on nexium for reflux- that didn't work- in fact I developed gastritis while I took it.
Now I am on Pariet (PPI) and a very restricted diet (i can't drink or eat a huge list of things for 6 months) and it has worked better, although if I break the diet by accidently eating something I am sick for days.

I hiccup constantly (though not as much as I used to). I really hope it goes away because not being able to have a few drinks is really frustrating. Does anyone know if it is possible to get rid of gastritis?

Or if it is possible to eventually drink alcohol and have the occasional coffee every now and then with it?

Im sorry you are suffering, and at such a young age too! Do they think that maybe the celiac could be contributing to your gastritis? did you not have gastritis before starting Nexium?

I too have gastritis. It really didn't start till I started taking Prilosec. I am now trying to come off of that drug.

Its so hard to give up things you love (like coffee and alcohol) but right now you need to realize that those things can cause more damage. Plus if you have celiacs, aren't you supposed to avoid alcohol anyway because of the whey that is in it? Im not really sure.

Some other things that I take that can help are DGL licorice root and aloe vera juice. They can coat the stomach and help it out.

i hope you find an answer soon. Dealing with gastritis is no fun-at any age! Ive had it off and on since I was 27 and I am 34 now-just stinks.

Have you ever tried carafate.

it comes in pills or liquid..you take it an hour before you eat or 3 hours after you eat. something like that.
that taken with your nexium or protonix or whatever your stomach may be works really well together to help with gastritis.

My sister and i both have bad digestive problems and when the gastritis acts up we use carafate....I like the pills there long and white and i use to crush them up put them in warm water stir it around and drink it now i just suck on them they taste like chalk..no biggy. my sister uses the liquid form.

it acts like a bandaide and protects the inflammed area giving it time to heal.

Ask you doctor about it.

Katie,
If you have celiac disease then it is an inherited problem and like Nancy said you are not suppose to drink alcohol--- ever.

I think you need to find out the do's and don't of celiac-- because it is in your DNA and not cureable!!

Re: Chronic Gastritis- Will I ever be able to have a few drinks again?

hi,
i've had gastritis, ulcer symptoms(not sure if I have one but feels like it),
reflux (LPR diagnosed) and constant problems with digestion for years

The one thing I have found that helped me with my burning is Manuka Honey --it's really amazing how it helped in a couple days after weeks of stomach burning and not being able to eat much of anything.
I bought it online and you may be able to find in health food stores. I would suggest trying it, plus it tastes good, thicker than regular honey though.

Oh yeah, alcohol is a big No No. I keep trying to sneak a beer now and then, but it won't let me get away without severe symptoms. even ONE beer. It's very sad, cuz I like a beer or nice glass of wine now and then, but it doesn't doesn't work with gastritis or acid reflux.
You can sneak a bad food now and then, but I've not known anyone to be able to drink alcohol successfully with this kinda problem. Not Fair.

good luck in feeling better soon.

Re: Chronic Gastritis- Will I ever be able to have a few drinks again?

I hear ya.
I just had a beer after a long week and wanted one
immediately got the burning. no surprise.
so took a teaspoon of manuka honey and it's better already!
Now I know everyone's different but this is the only thing that has even helped with my burning symptoms, so i hope you give it a try.
there's lotsa info on line about it, and you may be able to find it in a store if you're in a bigger city area.
good luck. I know this is no fun

Re: Chronic Gastritis- Will I ever be able to have a few drinks again?

No the doc doesnt think celiac had any thing to do with it. Didn't have gastritis before. I had a chronic cough caused by reflux and thats why i went on nexium. The nexium made cough go away. I didnt have gastritis at that stage. Doctor thinks gastritis was caused by stress or the drugs(combo of antibiotics and other drugs) I kept being put on by a previous doctor. I have never heard that I can't drink because of celiac, I was under the impression that some types didn't contain gluten. Oh well I will look into it for sure. Sorry to hear you guys are suffering too and thanks for the replies it helps to know other people who are going through it. I don't know if I can go without my friday night drinks forever! After 6 months of not drinking I wiill try my luck and then decide. Fingers crossed!

Re: Chronic Gastritis- Will I ever be able to have a few drinks again?

Katie; my son in law has Celiac disease. He can't drink beer but be does drink wine. He follows a strict diet of gluten free foods. He also has reflux and I think he takes Nexim for that.

I have have chronic gastritis for over ten years now - 24/7 most times.

About three weeks ago, I started what I call Harry's Regimen. After ten years of prescribed medication, OTC meds, herbal and alternative meds, I decided to give it one more try. And during this time, I saw 4 gastro specialists and had seveal scopes throughout these years. The only diagnosis was chronic gastritis.

Although the burning is still with me, I am not bothered so much during the day or waking hours. My bad time is it wakes me up in the early AM. But today it was 5AM instead of 2-3AM.

Daily I take:

4 Mastic Gum tablets (2 at 11Am and 2 at 4Am or before I go to bed).
4 Magneisum/Calicum tablets (2 with breakfast, 2 with dinner)
A digestive enzyme with each meal
An anti-oxidant, one per day
CQ10 - 2 per day
Manuka Honey (1 tsp after meals)

I drink 1/2 cup of Kerfir every other day and eat yougart every day.
When I go to the heath food store this week, I'm going to buy some probiotics and add that to my daily regimen.

I don't drink coffee or alcohol and miss both but I rather feel good.

I have a decent diet and do not eat anything I find hard to digest. I don't eat beef at all and only eat wheat pasta.

I'm not 100 percent yet but I am definately 75% better than I was three weeks ago.

Hope this helps. Maybe Harry can add to this if he thinks there are other supplements that may help.

Re: Chronic Gastritis- Will I ever be able to have a few drinks again?

Well, giving up the 2 biggies..........alcohol & caffeine. This is how I've handled that. For the first month after being dx, "none". Then, for the caffeine, I make Dandelion Root Tea & add l/2 capsule of an herb called Guarana, which has caffeine in it, then I add almond milk. It's just enough to get my brain somewhat awake, and no aftereffects.

As for the alcohol part, I dilute a small amount in water; just enough for me to feel I've had a relaxing drink & not being totally deprived.

But with each of these "cheats", I always add a drop of a mineral based product that "alkalinizes" it. It's called Alkazone/an Alkaline Booster. I buy it online.

But we're all different, that's just what keeps me somewhat satisfied.
