GB is out!

Hey all-
Thought I'd check in and let you know how surgery went. I was suppossed to start at 10 but they didn't end up starting until 11:30. I was getting nervous in the pre op room so my anesthiologist gave me some versed which made me sleepy. Next thing I knew, I was being wheeled into the or. They put some oxygen on my face and I asked the anesthiologist when we were starting. He said "we already did".. I guess I must have passed out because when I opened my eyes again i had the oxygen over my face and I was being wheeled to recovery. I was in a bit of pain so they gave me some dilaudid and some anti nauseau drugs as well. The only issue I had was a high heart rate. It was going from 100 to 140 quite a bit and they decided to moniter me for a while. My surgeon decided to admit me for the night but I was in recovery for a good 7 hrs while they ran tests. They just wanted to rule out any internal bleeding so they took blood tests 4 times. I was pretty much out of it but was sooooo thirsty, since I hadn't had anything to drink since the night before. The nurse gave me some ice chips but it I was dying for some water! My throat was also sore from the tube during surgery and I had to cough alot, which they say is good for you, since it expands the lungs. If anyone goes thru this, my advice is to hold a pillow to your chest and cough. It makes it easier. Finally they let me out of recovery and into my own hospital room where my family and husband were waiting. My room was great. The bed was so much more comfy then the other one i was laying in and they finally let me walk around. I felt so much better walking because the gas in my shoulders and side would go away. I didn't sleep to well because every hour someone would come in and take my temp or blood pressure. Plus I had to sleep with those massagers on my legs (for blood clots) and they kept me up. Finally this morning, my dr came in to check on me and said they are running one more blood test and if all is good, I am outta there. So I am back home now, drinking tons of gatorade. I don't have that much pain at all. Just some gas pain, and neck pain but it is nothing compared to the attacks I would have. I'm gonna try and go rest now but will keep you all posted on how I'm doing. Hope all is well.

Re: GB is out!

Good news! Glad things are going well. You're right about not getting any sleep in the hospital...it's no place for a sick person!

Take care and keep us posted....and NO FAT in your diet.

Re: GB is out!

I am so glad that it is over for you! Yeah, when I had mine, I woke up and thought I had dreamt going into the OR, so I was like waiting for them to start, but then I coughed, adn felt the pain, and knew it was over. They had to give me a ton of nausea meds before, during, and after, and three shots for pain while I was in recovery.
Hope that the pain is manageable for you!! The worst is behind you now!! Hope you can get plenty of rest. For me, teh wrost was when I would forget to set an alarm to take my meds, and would wake up after they had completely worn off, and then it would take FOREVER to start working again.
Good luck!!
