Sucralfate/Carafate? Hello, I am about 4 months post gallbladder removal for gallstones. Since the surgery have have intermittent periods of a dull, nagging pain on the left front of my abdomen that is just under where my ribs end. The pain will be gone for days or weeks at a time, then come back. Its never severe but can be annoying enough to be distracting. Acid reducers haven't done much and I'm wondering if my stomach is irritated because of bile. I have read that Sucralfate (normally used to help heal ulcers) is useful for this and am wondering if anyone here has had any experience using it for this purpose. I am probably going to give the Dr a call tomorrow and see what he thinks. Any thoughts or experiences would be great. Thanks! |
Re: Sucralfate/Carafate? Scotty, you shouldnt be having a back up of bile into your stomach. If you do then there is a problem because bile is excreted after your stomach. You could more likely just have occasional gastritis. In that case, yes carafate will help. Personally I have had the same problem. I get intermittent pain when my stomach is empty and it will come for a few weeks and then leave for a while. I discovered that if i take tums the pain goes away. Then I could get away with not having to take regular medication. But yes carafate may help you. I personally found that the liquid carafate, which is more expensive, worked better than the slurry pills. This might be a silly question, but did you try just pepto when this happens? |
Re: Sucralfate/Carafate? Yes I tried pepto but sometimes it doesn't seem to do anything. |
