Unhappy Peptic ulcer symptoms

Hello all, I am new to this board. Usually on the acid relux board. About 7 months or so ago I started having sharp shooting chest pains, it felt like I was having a heart attack. After seeing several doctors one finally ran heart tests on me (came back fine) to then make the determination that I was having GERD and esophageul spasms. What I did not know is the pain of the spasms mimick a heart attack! So he put me on Aciphex and after completing my bottle a month or so later I was back to normal.

I went off it and was fine for a long time up until a few weeks back. I noticed some pains here and there but nothing extreme. I had been popping advil for other pains (headache, menstral etc) Well last week I noticed I was having a burning sensation in my stomach- a new symptom to me. I blew it off, and at dinner last Sat had two glasses of wine and a glass of champagne followed by ice cream. I woke up at 3:00 am in a cold sweat, sharp pains in my chest, a VERY bad burning in my stomach along with a general stomach ache. I had never felt like this and was sure something had burst! So I got up had milk, then my stomach got totally upset. Stayed up for 2 more hours, finally fell back asleep.

I put myself back on Aciphex and went to see my doc who has referred me to a GI specialist for a possibly endoscopy. I have been having some pain all week up until last night, could be that the meds are working now.

Sorry for the LONG entry-BUT I fear I have an ulcer on top of my reflux and esoph. spasms. Can anyone tell me what the symptoms are and treatment? I am very worried!

Re: Peptic ulcer symptoms

It sounds like you have reflux. You will need to stay on the Aciphex. If you go off your symptoms will return. If you have an ulcer the Aciphex will heal that but you need to watch your diet and lay off spicy foods/alcohol which will aggravate your reflux.

Re: Peptic ulcer symptoms

no i have been on nexium for quite some time so i haven't had any gerd related symptoms for a while. my situation is that about 3 yrs ago i was under a lot of stress in school and my PCP put me on a SSRI called effexor. well this is a very contraversial drug (little did i know at the time) well the first thing he told me was that it was a great drug and it had worked wonders for many of his pts, BUT.......IT WAS KNOWN TO HAVE STRONG RELATION TO GASTRINTESTINAL IRRITATION. so he told me that if i experienced any GI pain at all to stop taking it and call him. well about 9 days into it out of no where i just fell to the ground and it felt (literally) as if i had been stabbed in my stomach with a 10 inch knife. needless to say i stopped and he put me on protonix and that was the end of that. well prior to this event i have never and i mean NEVER had any GI related issues i could eat whatever i so desired and was just fine, to this day i am constantly bloated and have substernal pain that radiates to my back left scapula. i have it narrowed down to either hiatal hernia or peptic ulcer. my assumption is that the sharp pain was the early stages of ulcer developement that is why he put me on the cycle of protonix, to allow the minor ulceration to heal. at the time i was in grad school and under a boat load of stress so i just assume that it never healed properly. i have never even spoken with a DR about this since, have jsut managed it on my own but i have had it. its to the point where i cannot hardly eat anything, and i mean anything without feeling like "jabba the hut" and the thing is that i am in excellent shape so even when i'm bloated it doesnt really show i just feel horrible.
