Can anyone tell me how uncomfortable an upper endoscopy is? Do you have a sore throat afterward? Can you eat after? How long does it take? Are you fully asleep?
I've had 2. It was a non-event both times. I was fully asleep and had no problems afterwards - no sore throat, no stomach problems. I could eat afterward. In fact, they usually give you juice and some cookies before they let you walk out the door. The only thing I noted was that I was drowsy for the rest of the day. All in all, no biggie.
I was awake for mine and it wasn't a bad experience at all. Not uncomfortable. When the scope is in your stomach it just feels like that nervous "butterflies" feeling. Afterwards I choked on my saliva because my throat was still numb and that was probably the worst part (besides the taste of the throat numbing spray...made me gag).
HI Narda,
I have had several Endoscopic exam for gastritis and there was no problem with the procedure.
A slight sore throat after but went away in several hours.

Ive had 2, once I threw up before the procedure due to the demerol iv....I was awake for both, but sluggish, really do not like getting them done but afterwards no problems.
I did all 3 of mine. I had 3 over 5 years and it was very easy. I did no drugs, no IV because I wanted to drive myself the first time. The second I did on my lunch break. The 3rd was for stuck food.
It does not hurt. The trick to doing it without drugs is to breath rather fast. Then you do not get the feeling to brup.
Hi there reasuring to hear you lot did ok have the endoscopy thats what my doc wants me to have done next!!! Im putting off and off so scared. Im even scared of the sedation dont want to feel out of control and scared of the numbing spray incase l choke oh why cant l have a sore toe instaed lol good luck all x
I had mine one month ago. It was not bad. I dosed for a while, and had a minor sore throat afterwards. But it didn't take long, and there really is nothing to be afraid of. I am still having problems with my gastritis, but it is improving with some new medication. Good luck and don't worry about the numbing spray; it is over before you know it.
