Unhappy Any NEW help out there for CHRONIC DIARRHEA? HELP!

My wife has had severe diarrhea for many months now. She has had it off and on for 10 years, but now it can't be controlled with anything it seems. She has had all the tests: colonoscopy, endoscopy, motility tests, blood tests for ALL of the other diseases, such as, Crohns, celiac, sprue, etc. She has been treated for conditions, such as, microsopic cholitis, using prednisone, etc. with no lasting improvement. She has been to holistic doctors, chinese therapists, been through all the food diets, and been tested for food allergies. She has been to the Mayo Clinic in 1997, and has been to specialists in Denver. They won't even return her emails now when she inquires about possible treatments we research anywhere we can find information.

She did get some relief in the past from cholestyramine, imodium, and even was on tincture of opium, which worked until she became tolerant to it, as she did to other opiates. This tolerance condition seems to be related to her Fibromyalgia as some researchers are now suspecting.

She has been told that she has diarrhea predominant IBS, but all her doctors have given up helping her saying they have done everything they can. No doctor seems to want to take any time to find out if anyone else in the US or the world has ever run into this condition so they just tell her they can't do any more. My wife has been very courageous with this and never gave up hope, but as of late is losing that hope. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE RELATE TO THIS OR OFFER UP ANY POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS OR THINGS THAT HELPED THEM!! THANKS!

Re: Any NEW help out there for CHRONIC DIARRHEA? HELP!

Soar...I'll keep this short, because it sounds like you've pretty much covered all the bases and done everything you can. One thing though. Has your wife ever been checked for Clostridium difficile? It is treated with the drugs Flagyl and if that doesn't work they go to Vancomycin. In my case, neither worked, so my GI doc did an experimental procedure (In the United States it's experimental) called a Fecal Transfer.

Check into it, because her symptoms sound a lot like mine. I have had IBS for several years, but when I got C. diff, it was a whole different game.

Good luck and if you need any more info, just post a note for me.

Re: Any NEW help out there for CHRONIC DIARRHEA? HELP!

I am currently taking rifaximin, a very expensive antibiotic used to treat bacterial overgrowth. However, after 5 days, I have had no change in the diarrhea. After this course is done, I will begin a prescription probiotic. As my problems, autoimmune and digestive began with a virus 25 years ago, I wonder if there is an effective antiviral medicine out there? What type of test is this fecal transfer? What can it detect? Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Any NEW help out there for CHRONIC DIARRHEA? HELP!

Fecal transfer is not a test, rather it is a procedure they can do to replace good flora to your bowels that have been killed off usually from the use of antibiotics. It can be passed person to person, however and if you're in the hospital and have it, they put you in isolation. Something like 40% of cases are contracted in hospitals through improper hygeine or no isolation procedures were put in effect.

I got it from long term use of antibiotics, that over time killed the good bacteria, leaving the bad bacteria that caused chronic diarrhea. When I went to the doctor (GI) he did a Colonoscopy and took a fecal sample which was tested. It came back positive for Clostridium difficile. Normal first treatment would be the drug Flagyl, but I have had so many gastric problems, my doc went right to the Vancomycin, which is extremely expensive. Retail is about $1,400 for a 10 day course. I had four treatments (four, 10 day treatments) and I still had the C. diff.

Fecal Transfer is a procedure my doctor had heard about, which is done quite a bit in Europe. In the States it is considered an experimental procedure. You have a donor (in my case, it was my wife) give a speciman of their feces and then it is very quickly (should be done within about 15 minutes) taken to the lab or doctor and they put the sample in a cone like object that resembles a coffee filter and holder. They pour normal saline over the sample and collect the liquid that comes out the bottom. This contains the donor's bacteria both good and bad. They then do a Colonoscopy and when they are in as far as they go with the flexible hose, they release a certain amount of this collected liquid. They release some of the sample every 10 cm while withdrawing the hose, until they're out. What this does, is to introduce good flora to your gut that can regain the balance with the bad flora and this solves your problem with chronic diarrhea. One thing though, it is quite painful when they release the room temperature collected liquid in side your body that is 97 or 98 degrees. Insist on very complete sedation. If I ever have to go through the procedure again, I'm going to insist they put me out prior to beginning. No more "Twi-light Sedation" for me!!!

I hope I have explained this so you are able to understand it, and how it is done. My diarrhea started decreasing in about three days and became less over a period of about two weeks, if I remember correctly. This was done in 2005. So, the name Fecal transfer is a transfer of fecal matter from a donor to the patient in order to reinstitute good flora to the gut and do away with your chronic diarrhea.

Hi, I'm sorry about your wife's condition. I too have IBS, but I was suffering from extreme constipation until I added fiber and lettuce to my diet.

Regular white flour food products (pasta, breads, etc.) was making my stool very hard. If she could eat some of these foods and not too much vegetables, maybe that will help some. Also, research the foods given to children when they have diarrhea. Too many or some medications can also be causing problems to the digestive tract. I'm not a doctor, but if it was me, I would find out from my doctor what medications I can stop taking or taper off. Learning to be relax and not stressed too much over matters that are out of a person's control can help heal and take away some stress from the body. I'm working on this myself, and so far, it's been helping. I hope your wife finds some relief and heals quickly.
