Question Constipation - Large Colon Disease

I was recently diagnosed with Slow Transit Constipation. I have bowel movements only if I take laxatives. Previously, I had partial bowel obstructions and after several hospital stays, a surgeon removed adhesions that may have contributed to the problem. Last August & September, I got partial obstructions again and now....things are just not moving. I had a sitzmarker test and that showed a diseased colon. The doctor says that I can continue as I have been....(taking laxatives to go - generally, every 5-10 days depending on how painful it gets) or I should consider having my large colon removed (Colectomy). This sounds really risky to me, but sometimes the pain is just soooo bad in my ribs, hips, back and my stomach blots out. When I get partially obstructed, it takes 4-5 days of just laying flat in bed without eating anything. I have to plan everything around my pain. How much I can eat, if I can eat, when can I take the laxatives.... I just don't know what to do... She says the surgery would be life changing as i would have bowel movements 3-6 times a day instead of 1 a week (or less) and if the partial obstructions are occuring in the small intestines, I may still continue to have that. Also, I had to have hernia repair surgery after the surgery for the adhesions (in 2001) and last month, I recieved a letter from the hospital informing me that the kegal patch used during the surgery has been recalled by the FDA. If I do have the partial colectomy (large intestines removed) she said that she would replace the patch at that time. I was wondering if the problems with the patch are contributing to my problems. Any help....or info is greatly appreciated. I just don't know what to do. I have lost over 50 lbs...(size 18 down to a 9) granted that's not all bad, but I like to eat... and when the stomach is saying "feed me".....and the intestines are saying "dare ya".... somethings gotta give, and usually, I end up eating ..followed by a few days of suffering before I give in and take the laxatives..... Has anyone ever had a colectomy for "slow transit constipation"? Thoughts???
