Do you need meds to cure gastritis?

I was just diagnosed today with gastritis. I hve a buised tender feeling in my upper stomach and I feel burning in my throat. The doctor put me on Prevacid. She said I should start to feel better in a week but I will have to be on the Prevacid for a few months. I really dont like to take meds. Is there anything else that I can do to heal my stomach without the medicine?

Re: Do you need meds to cure gastritis?

I have gastritis as well and the bruised, full, painful feeling under my left ribs. I was told to watch my diet as well as take the PPI's. Avoid anything spicy, greasy, acidic or anything with caffeine. That may help speed up the healing process. Good Luck!

Re: Do you need meds to cure gastritis?

I found that every time I take an antibiotic -- I end up with gastritis and a PPI has never cured me of all the inflammation even after month using a PPI-- I know we are all different and it helps many people.

I went to an Alternative Care MD and he prescribed me Mastica to be take twice daily between meals (2 500 mgm capsules) and a probiotic supplement and it cure me in 2 weeks.
The cure was verified by an Endoscopic exam that had been scheduled by my Gastro Doctor 6 months prior to taking the Mastic Gum.

I have used it several times since then in 7/2001 and I buy it from the Vitamin Shoppe.

Re: Do you need meds to cure gastritis?

I've taken the mastic gum, but can't say for sure it helps with my symptoms. It certainly didn't make them worse, just not convinced. They made me belch a bit, and it actually felt better when I did. I'm really not sure what's wrong with my stomach so I'd say they're worth a try.

After I stopped the Mastic Gum, I did find good results with DGL Licorice capsules. I bought the sugar free variety. You chew them 20minutes before meals, saliva helps them work. They taste pretty awful, but, if you are at the point that you just want to try something to help it's tolerable. I've gotten used to them now, acquired a taste I guess.
