CARAFATE / SUCRALFATE - Anyone else taking it for bile diarrhea?

I tried going to a new GI doctor, since I've had uncomfortable side effects from Cholestyramine and Colestid. He tried putting me on CARAFATE (generic name is SUCRALFATE) to see if I respond better. The thing I don't understand is, this medication is usually to treat ulcers (which I don't have), but he says it can also stop bile diarrhea and possibly I won't have side effects from it (Colestid and Cholestyramine both helped stop the D, but left me with side effects).

Does anyone else use this medication for diarrhea? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: CARAFATE / SUCRALFATE - Anyone else taking it for bile diarrhea?

I'm using for a mysterious acid burning in my upper abdomen, but not for ulcers. I can see why he would use it for bile diarrhea because it is supposed to coat your insides and prevent any pain and damage from acid and bile. It also causes mild constipation.

I am taking it 4 times per day. Keep two things in mind. First, I felt crummy on it for the first 10 days or so. I felt full and nauseas at first but it did wear off. I"m not at 2 weeks and I have no side effects. Second, follow the guidelines for when you can eat verses when you take the meds. Otherwise all you'll end up doing is coating the food instead of your GI tract, and then the meds don't work.

Good luck

Re: CARAFATE / SUCRALFATE - Anyone else taking it for bile diarrhea?

I was prescribed this for heartburn, fullness, nausea, and diarrhea. I'm to take it before meals and at bedtime. Dr is hoping the mild constipation will be a relief from the 5-6 BMs per day. I honestly don't eat anything but yogurt or applesauce during the day, and have just started taking it before dinner. What side effects are you having? Its only been a couple days for me.

My Dr. gave to me for nausea. Suppose to take 4 teaspoons after each meal. I have not taken in a while but should go back to it because the nausea is back.
