I've nearly lost all faith.. if anyone can help, thanks

I'm very close to giving up. I'm sinking into a deep depression and I'll explain why. When I was 14 years old I used to be a very lively young boy. I had many friends, I went to the movies often, I played games, and I generally enjoyed life. I loved to eat, I loved to drink, but I also worked out, excercised, and did my best to be as healthy as possible. One morning I woke up with rotten tasting burps. I began vomiting, suffered severe intestinal cramps, insomnia, and the pain was unbearable.

I left it be thinking that it'd go away. A week later I was still having these attacks. I went to the doctors. They claimed I had the flu. Another week passed and still, no recovery. Afterwards, I went from doctor to doctor to doctor. I've been on countless medication. I've had an upper gi scope, ultra sounds, I had my poop looked at. Everything came up negative. 7 years and still.. no cure. I've lost everything. I can't even work yet they won't even let me have ssi because they want a name but from all tests I appear completely healthy except for a large ammount of gas.

Yet I'm tired all the time, I'm weak, and I'm stuck to eating only three different types of food. Anything else gives me an attack. Just about everything I drink promotes an attack. I lost my friends because I couldn't do anything anymore. I still live with my parents even though I'm 21 because I can't work. Luckily my Fiance has stayed with me through all of this and I bless her heart. I need help. Even if there's no cure. Please.. can someone tell me how to get rid of these nasty taste? No matter what I try they overpower everything. Does anyone know what is wrong with me?

Re: I've nearly lost all faith.. if anyone can help, thanks

I feel sorry for you and can sort of understand a little, because I am in a similar boat.

In my case, as briefly as I can tell you -- I've had to take a medication (Cholestyramine) for 5 years to control diarrhea I've had ever since getting my gallbladder removed in 2002. But last June, the company who made my medicine was bought out by another company. Ever since last June I have had a lot of gas and occasional nausea and upset stomach, but the most annoying thing has been a sour/bitter taste in my mouth all day, and my tongue had become white and coated. This has been going on for almost a year, with no relief in sight. It seemed to occur because I was switching medicine brands, but I've tried several differents meds and none of them seem to correct the problem. Unfortunately, I NEED to take the medicine in order to control my diarrhea.

Like yourself, I have been from doctor to doctor to doctor and I have heard all sorts of different reasons. I've had tests including the endoscopy (tube down the throat) and nobody can find anything. The people in my life sometimes call me a hypochondriac, and it's really depressing. Sometimes I don't know how much longer I can stand this either. I'm pretty sure my problem is a direct, adverse reaction to the meds I am taking, but I'm not sure.

I wish I knew what to tell you, but all I can do at the moment is say you're not alone. What types of medicines have you tried? You say the tests show "gas", so what kind of meds have they given you for that? 7 years is a long time to suffer, but I once had a very bad health problem (not this one) when I was 22 which lasted until I was 27, but I eventually found the answers for THAT, so it is possible. I wish you the best and maybe through this message board we can find answers with others' help.

Re: I've nearly lost all faith.. if anyone can help, thanks

Thank you, both of you for your kind responses. Surprisingly they didn't really give me much for the gas except some green pills that don't work. I think they might have been gas-ex or something like that. I've been on medication to weaken the acid in my stomach, this medication is Nexium, but all it helped was my acid reflux which is good but isn't my main problem, unfortunately. There latest theory was that my body was producing too much bile that was going into my stomach so I've been on Sucralfate. Unfortunately.. this didn't work either.

Luckily no one calls me a hypochondriac anymore because there's no way I can fake these sulphur tasting burps. Plus my vomit smells much worse than normal vomit. The stench can clear the room. So this is why I decided to take my problem online because there's so many people out there in this world that maybe someone who has been cured might notice this post and tell me how to fix it or atleast a way to treat it. That sour/bitter taste in your mouth is something I have as well. Again, thank you very much for letting me know I'm not alone and responding kindly to my post. I hope you can fully get better soon and I hope I can get better soon. It's really depressing and painfult to know I can't support my fiance and that I'm the one in need of support.

Hmmm. That's interesting because recently a GI doctor prescribed Sucralfate for me as well, but I've been afraid to take it. I still have the pills though in case I decide to try it. I've heard this is a medication used to heal ulcers, which I don't have... but there is a possibility that the bile is coming up and that's why I have the sour taste/coated tongue.

The colestid and cholestyramine I am taking is supposed to soak up all the bile from my gut and expell it when I go to the bathroom. I've often toyed with the idea that maybe it's not all getting absorbed though. I can always try the Sucralfate.. but I'm afraid to take medications, especially one for an ulcer when I don't have an ulcer. I hear this one is supposed to coat your stomach.

The only reason I never minded taking bile sequestrants like cholestyramine and colestid is because they're NOT ABSORBED... they act like a sponge and then are eliminated..

Re: I've nearly lost all faith.. if anyone can help, thanks

OMG, I've had the same problems too but mine have only been going on since well..before i had my gallbladder removed. After having my gallbladder removed in Jan., I'm still not better. I have acidy tasting stuff come up my throat too and I vomit constantly! I had an upper GI performed and they said i had gastritis and excess bile in my stomach!! they too gave me Sulcrafate..well it was that but in a generic for..i believe it was Caraphate. It was supposed to limit the bile and it did make my stomach feel better for a couple weeks then I started having tight chest pains and thought it was causing it so they took me off of it and put me on prilosec and i'm still having trouble. all last week i threw up bile every morning..almost like a pregnant woman..except for i know 100% that i'm not lol. Some days i feel okay but other times, when i take the "sick spells," i feel like giving up and like i'm just about to die. everyone around me thinks i'm a hypochondriac!! my boyfriend luckily has stuck by me through everything..thank god we found good mates! I'm going tomorrow for yet another test to try and figure out what is wrong with me! I'm having a "gastric dumping" test preformed. They think what may be happening is that my stomach is not digesting my food--crazy! do some research on it and see if you think it could be linked to how you feel?? hope this helps!

You could try enzymes, probiotics and apple cider vinegar, and read the hundred year lie by randall fitzgerald. Many health problems are caused by environmental toxins and our diet. I have had digestive problems for about a year now and went to the dr. more than once with unbearable abdominal pain(I thought maybe appendicitis) and they found nothing so I did some research on enzymes, intestinal bacteria and stomach acid. Lots of info on the internet. For the bad taste I gargle with organic cider vinegar (1T. to 8 oz. distilled water) and you can also do a sinus cleanse with it that helps alot. Info in the Bragg apple cider vinegar book. Best of luck to you.

Re: I've nearly lost all faith.. if anyone can help, thanks

I'm so sorry you're going through this, and at such a young age too.

I agree with what Lindalue said about the enzymes and apple cider vinegar. If you click on my name to see my other posts, you'll see a thread called "How long does it take to get PPIs out of your system?" on the Acid Reflux board. It outlines my whole ordeal of being treated for acid reflux and then discovering just last week that my symptoms actually fit those for LOW stomach acid, or hypochlorhydria. My main symptoms were terrible bloat and constant belching. The bloat was so bad that I couldn't breathe. All the antacids and purple pills and such were actually making it worse!

So right now I'm taking apple cider vinegar (two teaspoons before each meal) and papaya enzymes, and eating things such as broccoli and grapefruit that actually PROMOTE acid production. And I'm feeling miraculously better.

Do a search on "low stomach acid" and "hypochlorhydria" to see if your symptoms might fit. I am not a doctor and I am not advising anybody to go off their medicine, but I'm just sharing what worked for me.

Re: I've nearly lost all faith.. if anyone can help, thanks

I also have this crazy illness. I post on here and another medical forum, hoping to figure out how to stop it. I have had it for over a year, and have had, ultrasounds on gall bladder, H Pylori test, and a whole mess of medications. Here is some of what I picked up. Right when I get that first gross burp, I take my anti gas med x2 and acid reflux. I really think that if someone could test that particular symptom they would figure this out. It is the burping and gas that are what makes you so sick. It is absolutely the worse thing I have ever smelled. I heard to eat garlic, it helps to fight the odor and taste. My gas pains hurt me so much that I cry and cry until I fall asleep, from being so exhausted hiding these symptoms or fighting them. It is depressing, and embarrasing. Worse is that everyone doesnt beleive that they can not find a "name" for this. My Dr says I have GERD and a nervous stomach. true. But what causes the sulphur smells and taste? Sorry I know this is gross, but I have to get this solved. My next plan is to do a thourough colon cleanse. I am going to the health food store to get some advice on what is best. I will let you know if anything helps, PLEASE let me know if you find out anything. OH and no I dont eat eggs very often, so please dont ask that.

let us know if this helps...

Hope you have not given up, and are still checking.
Here is what I like to suggest;
read the - The Makers Diet by Jordan S. Rubin
Master Cleanse - small book read and follow to a T.
(yes it's not easy....well worth it though!)
Follow two weeks if you can. NB-if you get headaches at any time you need to drink the seasalt water right away or if your open to it get colonics. It is a sign that toxins are in the bowels faster than they can be illiminated
NOTICE - and write down what you are craving and the intensity. Important to know for later on.
Apply the Makers diet with his probiotic formula.
Follow two to three weeks depending on how you feel
Keep drinking the lemon water. Real fruit lemons- NOT from a bottle.
Master Cleanser - 10 days
By this time you are very close to clear.
You would have read a lot and understood a lot about how your body works.
Your body's likes, dislikes, how your emotional health plays a role.

During this hydrotherapy really helps... not all is able to afford or open to it.
You can buy equipment for home use. COLONET is the best.
If people only knew how many of our problems originate in the gut???
Also - Check out Brenda Watson high integrity products with fantastic educational material.
YOU DO THE WORK = YOU GET THE RESULTS - it is as simple as that!

Good luck...
PS. There is a terrible company from Las Vegas sending out mail for a product called COLON CURE MD™
It has no list of ingrediens list AND it makes promises that CAN'T be fulfilled! A trained eye can instantly spot it as a SCAM - unfortunately a lot of people have been scammed. Check out all companies from all angles before you buy!
It would be VERY sad to have anyone using these awesome products 'cause these sick lowlife who scam people who really need help.

Re: I've nearly lost all faith.. if anyone can help, thanks

Thank you for all the replies. Sorry that I'm slow. Since my last posts my illnesses have gotten worse. I've been having it for years but it's progressively getting worse and fast. I turned 21 so I have to wait until the end of the week to even get a normal appointment before getting to see a specialist. I feel like I'm dying despite doctors saying that they couldn't see much wrong. Anyway, I'll try the low acid stuff, it's worth a shot. Things are already horrible as they are now and I'm becoming really depressed.

Re: I've nearly lost all faith.. if anyone can help, thanks

Amazingly I have a similar problem. when I was seven I was getting sick every morning before school at school so on... I would pass gas, throw up, be miserable. My mother took me to the small town doctors and they did an endoscopy and found nothing much like others. They said I was lactose intolerant and left it at that. I started a journal once in highschool to see what I could eat. I still would randomly get sick for days and then all of a sudden feel better. When in college I started getting ulcers in my throat and then later would start the sulphur gas from both ends. No doctor could tell me why I was so sick. I movedto Colorado after college and began working. Within 3 months of living in Colorado I lost 50 lbs and was not working out! The doctors told me it was altitude sickness and can last for a long while. Another doctor told me I was pregnant which was funny to me seeing I was a virgin!!

After meeting my now husband I became very sick again! for sick months I went through what you are going through. I finally gave into his request to see a doctor. After many test I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease. This diagnosis was in 2006. In Feb. 2008 my illness of gas, diarrehea, vomitting got the worse it had ever been. I woke up in the middle of the night so sick I started excreating blood instead of stools the cramping was so bad I passed out and I was running a fever of 101.00. We had to wait for the doctors office to open two hours later. After five days of this and many test and a stay at the hospital. I was told there was nothing wrong and I don't have Crohn's like I was told two years earlier.

At this point I don't care if I get a name I just want my body to work they way it should. I have tried constant diet regiments, excersize, cleanses, and pills. Nothing has really worked for me. If I eat only certain things and don't vary then I will go for a while without being sick, but not for long sometimes. I am seeing my doctor everytime I get sick so that he knows how often and maybe he will come up with something. I will let you know if I come up with anything.

Hang in there and be strong. You are lucky you found such a great women. My husband is her equal because he takes care of me much of the time.
