Once my insurance changed several years ago (and I no longer needed a referral), I just went straight to whichever specialist I needed to see. It's a good idea to have these specialists "cc" your primary care physician, though, so that your file in the primary care physician's office is up to date and he/she knows what's been going on with you (and what kinds of meds you've been taking). Get the hida scan. It checks out so many parts of your digestive system and if your gall bladder isn't functioning properly, the hida will indicate this (I only had one stone but had an inflamed gb...am so glad it's been removed, thanks to the hida scan).

I would also rather branch out on my own than bug my primary care doctor with all of my problems lately. My ultra sound came back normal but I am still getting nausea very often which lasts for days and having digestive problems and heartburn.
