Severe Constipation from fruit cleanse?
On Sunday evening, I came back from a trip where I ate what I felt was too much rich food (and too much wine). I decided to try a three-day "cleanse" using only raw fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds (mostly fruits, which I'd read were the easiest to digest and therefore let your system relax). I'd had two friends try this and they said it really worked for them.
I started on Tuesday afternoon, and have eaten mostly high fiber fruits - cherries, peaches, blueberries, apples, grape tomatoes. At night I've had some veggies and nuts (mixed greens with pine nuts, avocado and olive oil/lemon juice), to balance out the fiber with some good fats. I've been drinking PLENTY of water. No alcohol, coffee or tea.
From all I've read, eating these foods there is absolutely no reason I should be constipated, but I have in fact not had a normal bowel movement since I began the cleanse. I'm passing small bits of hard stool, clearly not fully eliminating and feeling pressure to go (especially after eating).
Last night and this morning, I tried using Fleet suppositories which did not work (after a half hour I just eliminate the melted suppository and have some gas). The directions say that if you still do not have a bowel movement using Fleet, you could be in trouble.
So my first question is - how do I get immediate relief and have a bowel movement (and how do I know if I'm approaching an impaction)? Second question - should I continue with the last day of the cleanse or transition back into regular foods (and what foods might I be cautious about)?
Thanks so much,
