Hey! So you said you drink a glass every night? Is that right?
I decided to try the Metamucil instead of the Miralax this week to see if it saves me any money. Just wondering how much you use a day.....a teaspoon?...a
tablespoon? Just one glass a day? Thanks for your help.~Mush

Hey Mush....I use two heaping tablespoons in a 6-8 oz glass of water, but you may want to start with less just to be safe. I'm on a lot of meds, so I need more. Mix it up, then drink it quickly....Otherwise, it gets a little thick. You can use more H2O if you want, but I'd rather not have all the volume. Also, if I drink too much water @ night, I have to pee in the middle of the night.
You can adjust the mix from there....If things move too quick, or you have too much gas, back it off a little. Conversely, if it's not enough, then add a bit more. Make small adjustments until you find what's right for you. Everyone has a different make-up....Amt of meds + veggies eaten daily + other foods (fiber and protein) + activity level + natural metabolism = amt of fiber needed.
My spouse uses it in the AM upon wakening, but I've found at night after dinner is good for me. Again, go with what works for you. My spouse doesn't use any pain meds, and uses 1 tablespoon....Has really grown to like it and helps keep things regular. I've convinced a few friends as well...None of whom take pain meds....Good healthy BMs are essential....Much of today's cancers result from toxins in foods & etc....Sit in the bowels for too long.
According to Dr. Oz (on Oprah), your BMs should not require much effort and be "S" shaped. It takes the right amt of fiber to accomplish this. I have to use the bathroom usually 2-3 X day, which is fine by me....I feel a whole lot better. 2 x is the norm, but sometimes 3. If it turns out to be more, then, there is probably too much fiber.
Lastly, a little gas can accompany fiber supplementation, which is normal. Again, slowly adjust the amt to "fine tune" things. I've got it to where I have little to none. It may take your body a little time to adjust. Also, small changes in fiber supplementation can result in different results, so make small changes and give your body time to adjust. Some take it 1-2 days...Take too much....Get some gas, and then quit. They're doing it all wrong.
Hope this helps. It's probably more than you thought you'd ever need to read about fiber! (LOL).
I'm on Methadone for CP and I use it too. Even though I have IBS, I've found that Metamucil evens things out. I normally use a teaspoon in about 6 oz of water, morning and evening, before meals. I have gone up to three doses a few times over the past two years or so, but normally, two works out just fine.
One thing to remember, you shouldn't take any meds for two hours after taking the Metamucil. You won't get full value of the dose if you do. I have a fast metabolism, due to stomach/intestinal surgery in '75, so I can take my meds a little sooner, if needed. I have found the sugar free orange flavor is the best for me.
